Chapter 5
“Noona, is there something going on today?”
“Huh?”
Yoona stops weaving and looks up at Taemin, not noticing that he was standing in front of her. She is sitting on a bench in the courtyard, finishing up her special little project.
“Your smile is really big today.”
“My smile?”
“Yeah - You look really excited. Actually, nowadays, you look really excited on Fridays.”
“Do I?”
Yoona smiles wider unconsciously.
“So what’s going on today?”
“Nothing really. I just have my lessons with my mentor.”
Yoona blinks twice at her own statement, realizing how much it really makes her smile while Taemin’s mouth forms the letter “O”.
“I’m glad you enjoy your lessons then, noona.”
Key pops up from behind the bench with a wide grin.
“That’s not the only thing that she seems to be enjoying.”
Yoona elbows him in the stomach and turns slightly red at the statement.
“What does that mean Key?”
He rubs his stomach, laughing at the slight pain. Then he settles himself on the opposite end of the bench.
“What it sounds like! Girl, you’re lucky, you’re my best friend. Or else I would have clawed your eyes out and chewed on your arms by now from all the times you’ve hit me.”
“You deserve those hits.”
“Whatever. How long are you going to work on that -“ Key points at the square bundle of yarn in her lap. “- thing? You’ve been working on it for weeks.”
“This thing is a mini crochet bag, okay? And I’m done now. I didn’t have time to work on it these past few weeks.”
“Because Yuri’s keeping you busy?”
The way Key says it earns him a kick, which sends him flying off the bench onto the ground. Taemin just laughs at what happens while Yoona’s temper flares up.
“Quit saying things like that!”
Key just laughs as he gets up, tears forming in his eyes.
“Look at you. Getting so worked up over a few teases. My suspicions were right!”
Yoona furrows her eyebrows.
“What suspicions?”
“Key hyung thinks you like your mentor.”
“Of course I like my mentor. She’s a great mentor.”
Taemin shakes his head.
“No, noona. Like like.”
Yoona freezes, brain registering Taemin’s words properly.
“I don’t like her that way.”
It takes her longer than she should to deny it. Her face feels hot all of a sudden.
“Look at her. She’s red as a tomato!”
Her blush increases and Yoona finds herself gawking at the two boys.
“Stop teasing me!”
Key and Taemin both laugh as they head to class, leaving the irked girl behind.
--
Stupid. Teasing. Boys.
Yoona swipes down the paint brush for every word, splattering the canvas with multiple colors.
Her actions earn her a worried Yuri.
“Yoona, is there something the matter?”
“No. Not. At. All.”
Yoona continues to coat the whiteness, red being dominant now.
Yuri just steps back, slightly amused at Yoona’s behavior.
It’s not until half an hour later that Yoona stops.
“Okay. Better.”
Yoona looks up at her mess and exhales a breath she didn’t know she was holding. Then she turns around to grin triumphantly at Yuri. The older girl begins to speak.
“Good because -“
Midway through her sentence, Yuri laughs cheekily. Yoona blinks twice, unsure why Yuri is laughing. Yuri then steps forward, bringing her hand up to Yoona’s face. Yoona instinctively leans back, but Yuri’s comment causes her to stop.
“Silly girl, you got paint on your face.”
She uses her right thumb to wipe away the green on her left cheek. Yoona’s got this adorable dazed look on her face, but Yuri’s not going to tell her that.
“Oh wait.” Yuri stares at the now smudged green. “Oops.”
Realizing what just happened, Yoona brings her hand up to cover her cheek with the back of her hand. They both burst out laughing.
“Thanks, but I’ll clean it myself.”
She walks over to the sink and wets one of the clean towels. Yuri follows behind and takes the towel from her hands.
“No, I’ll do it. You can’t see it.”
That is true. There are no mirrors in the studio. As Yuri cleans off the green paint, Yoona can’t help but stare at her face. The close proximity causes her to notice the smile lines that Yuri has.
“… You smile a lot.”
Yoona blurts out the obvious and Yuri just blinks twice before smiling that charming smile.
“I know. I like smiling.”
“That’s good. I like it when you smile.”
Yoona wants to slap herself for the sudden word vomit.
Yuri pulls back, cleaning off the last of the paint.
“Then I’ll smile more for you.”
Those six words cause Yoona to grin like a goofy idiot. And when she realizes she’s grinning like a goofy idiot, her mind and heart start to communicate, working out the logistics and reasoning for why she’s smiling so much.
She blushes when her brain registers an answer.
Was Key right about her liking Yuri?
“Yoona, are you alright?”
Yoona shakes her head, trying to rid herself of her current thoughts. It didn’t work very well.
“Yeah.”
She can see that Yuri is contemplating to push the conversation further, but she decides not to.
“Okay, let’s start the lesson then.”
--
Yoona returns home, mind swirling around Key’s words instead of the lesson. She lies on her bed, memories of Yuri filtering into her mind.
Her charming smile.
Her attractive jaw line.
Her intriguing personality.
Not to mention the few times where Yuri’s made her blush.
She ruffles her own hair, confused.
“… I need a break to really think things out.”
She glances at the small crochet bag on her desk and then reaches with her arm to pick it up. Her eyes travel around the object as she runs through the plan for it, an idea she had the first time Yuri and her spoke on the phone.
“Yeah, I’ll take a break tomorrow. And while I do that, hopefully this idea will work for her.”
--
Waking up from a nap, Yuri stretches. She glances at the clock, noticing that she slept past the meeting time with Yoona.
Strange.
Seohyun should have woken her up in time for the lesson.
Yuri gets up from her bed and walks towards the study room where Seohyun is working on some papers.
“Is Yoona not coming for her lesson today?”
“Good afternoon.” Seohyun stands up from her chair and picks up a box off her desk. She walks over to Yuri and holds it out to her. “Yoona dropped this off and said that she wouldn’t be able to attend today’s lesson. She said she wasn’t feeling well.”
“Is she alright?”
Seohyun nods and gestures the box to Yuri.
“She seemed well, just a little tired. She was adamant about giving you this. Her instructions were to have you open it at the front gate while facing the household. And I am to walk you there while you are blindfolded.”
Yuri stares at Seohyun, surprised by the odd instructions.
“What in the world? What is she planning?”
Seohyun smiles.
“You will see.”
Yuri contemplates possible scenarios, but she shrugs it off.
“Well, if she says so. Take me there.”
With that, Seohyun blindfolds Yuri and guides her to the front gates. When they arrive, Seohyun steps aside and unsheathes the blindfold. Yuri then proceeds to lift the lid off the box.
A note is the first thing that greets her.
Yuri moves the sticky note aside and tilts her head as she examines the small crochet bag. It’s hand woven with grey stitching and she can strap it over her shoulder. As she continues looking, a glint of brownish tan catches her eye from the ground. She looks down, eyebrow raised at what she sees.
A penny.
She looks around that one penny and finds there are more pennies scattered around. There are also a few dimes, nickels, and quarters, but the majority is pennies. The coins seem to be forming a trail on her white cobbled stone pathway. Her eyes travel to where it is leading to and then she grins.
It leads back to her art studio.
Yuri follows the trail, picking up the coins one by one.
Her back starts to ache as she continuously leans down, but her brain hasn’t registered the pain yet. All of her focus is on finding all of the coins and picking them up. She slips them into the little crochet bag she was given at the beginning of the trail. Eventually, she reaches the studio with a little weight tugging on her from the bag.
Yuri looks up to see a sign on the door and she laughs at what it says.
--
The cashier is not sure what is more strange - the fact that a grown lady is paying for a paintbrush and paints with only coins or that she seems to have the biggest smile on the world while doing so.
The way her eyes shimmer after the transaction is made makes him shrug.
He’s just going to go with both as equally strange.
--
Yuri stares at the blank canvas before her and then slowly closes her eyes, recalling her meetings with Yoona.
“When lost, one should always back track to the beginning.”
Her childhood memories flood back, the ones where she is painting. Those were the days where she truly enjoyed painting.
“And I think that’s when you truly enjoy something you do - when you do it for yourself.”
For yourself.
That’s right. It was much more fun to just paint whatever she wanted, whatever she felt, with no restrictions, with no one to tell her what to do.
“Correction, it’s always good to have fun. Especially if it’s your job.”
Her job. When it became her job to paint, she had forgotten to have fun.
Yuri smiles and opens her eyes.
--
“Done.”
Yuri sets her palette and brush down on the ground and then tucks a few strands of hair behind her ear. Her eyes travel from one corner of the painting to another, checking for any mistakes. Her hands settle on her hips and she grins, satisfied with what she sees for the first time in months.
--
Sunday afternoon comes by and Yoona smiles when she receives a phone call from Yuri.
“Hi.”
“Hi Yoona. Are you feeling better?”
“A little.”
She was still a bit confused over her feelings for her, but she wasn’t going to tell her that.
“Thank you for the gift.”
Yoona grins.
“Did your inspiration come back?”
“I don’t know. I’d like to show you and have you judge for yourself.”
“I’ll be there soon.”
Yoona practically sprints out of the dorm, running like a mad woman, excitement crawling around her stomach.
