Chapter 7

Yuri leads Jessica to the painting and proudly shows it to her. She grins foolishly when Jessica’s reaction mirrors Yoona’s.

“It’s beautiful.”

“Yoona.”

“Hmm?”

“That’s the name of the painting.”

Jessica turns her head to look at Yuri quickly.

“You dedicated it to the girl who was just here?”

“Yes.”

Jessica is surprised.

“That’s impressive. You only dedicate paintings to significant people in your life.”

Yuri looks up at the painting, her eyes clear.

“Without her, I wouldn’t have gotten my inspiration back.”

“I see.” Jessica chuckles. “It looks like I’m not the only one who hasn’t changed.”

“Oh?”

“Your eyes.”

“What about them?”

“They still light up when you talk about something - someone close to your heart. She must be very important to you.”

“She is important to me.”

“Is she important to you because she helped with your inspiration or because she is something more? I saw you holding hands.”

Yuri averts her eyes away from Jessica.

“…We’re not like… that.”

Yuri cringes at her inability to find a better word than ‘that.’ Jessica laughs and Yuri does not like the reaction.

“But I can see that you want to be.”

“What - how?”

“Your emotions have always been easy to read. Those eyes tell all.”

“Then I should start talking to you with my eyes closed.”

Jessica laughs even more.

“What?”

“You didn’t even deny it, Yuri. And judging from the way her eyes were sad when she untangled your hands, I’m guessing she likes you too.”

Yuri has always found it a bit creepy how well Jessica can read a person by observing body movements and feelings through someone’s tone of voice.

“…I know.”

“Then why aren’t you dating if the feeling is mutual?”

Yuri stuffs her hands into her front pockets and looks back up at the painting, studying the doe.

“Yoona’s an exceptionally talented artist. She may doubt herself, but I can tell that she’s going to go far. Her art school is prestigious for its show so there will be many experts and connoisseurs from different countries. She’ll be requested by one for sure. And there’s a very big chance that it will be a foreigner.”

“You sound very confident of that.”

“I am. These past three months have shown me how talented she is.”

Jessica crosses her arms and turns back to look at the painting.

“You don’t want to start something with her because her career will be blossoming. You don’t want to hold her back if she is going to go out of the country.”

Yuri laughs softly.

“Damn, how is it that you know everything?”

“I’ve known you for years, Yuri. I can read you like the back of my hand. Don’t let the blonde hair fool you, you know it’s dyed.”

“How does Tiffany get away with stuff when you have such all-seeing eyes?”

“She doesn’t, but don’t try to change the subject. You’re such a martyr sometimes. You’re always trying to be the one who gets hurt instead of hurting others.”

Some things just never change. Jessica elbows her softly.

“But let me tell you, Yuri. You may think this is the right choice, but you could be wrong. Remember that it takes two people for a relationship to work. Yoona has a right to decide between love and passion, but she’ll only be given the choice if you let her develop that love.”

“That’s exactly why I’m trying hard not to lead her on. I don’t want to give her the choice. It’s too hard to make. She’s got talent and she shouldn’t waste it.”

“You think she can’t do both.”

Again, Jessica pretty much reads what’s on Yuri’s mind.

“I’ve been there, Jessica. I know what it’s like. To say it’s hard is an understatement. It can chew you up and beat you like a bitch.”

She’s referring to her past relationship and it only makes Jessica scoff at her.

“Typical.”

“What?”

Jessica lightly smacks her on the head.

“You forget that Yoona is not you.”

Yuri says nothing else as she soaks in the obvious truth. Jessica just shrugs her shoulders.

“And that you’re not the past you.”

Whilst some things never do change, some things do.

--

Sunday morning comes by and Yoona wakes up early to a phone call from Yuri. She should feel grumpy considering she only got a few hours of sleep from thinking about Yuri so much, but she crumbles at her voice.

“Hi Yoona. Did I wake you?”

Yoona groggily rubs at her eyes and tries to adjust to her surroundings.

“Sorta, but that’s okay. I should be up by now.”

She glances at the red numbers showing 10:37 AM on her alarm clock.

“I’m sorry about yesterday.”

“Oh no, it’s fine. Did Jessica like the painting?”

“She did.”

Yoona hums in response as she slowly wakes up.

“Mhh, that’s good.”

“Listen, are you busy today?”

“No. I was just going to study for a bit before heading to your place.”

“Ah… then perhaps you could accompany me today?”

Yoona’s senses kick up and she’s awake now.

“Eh?”

“I couldn’t take you out yesterday since Jessica dropped by. So how about today?”

“But the project…”

Yoona worries since there is only week left before the art show.

“Just take a break for today. You’ve been working hard these past months without stopping. We can continue right where we left off after today. Okay?”

Her brain then registers that Yuri was offering to spend the entire day with her.

The entire day.

“Yeah. That’d be great.”

Yoona wants to smack herself because of how quickly she changes her mind.

“I’ll pick you up in an hour then. Which dormitory do you live in?”

Yoona gives Yuri her address and then rolls over in her bed squealing after the phone call is over.

Oh, she really wants to smack herself now.

--

It’s the first time Yoona’s been in Yuri’s car and she really likes the thought of sitting side by side her while she drives.

“So where are we going?”

Yoona asks as she buckles her seatbelt.

“Mhh, is there anything you wanted to do today?”

“I haven’t gone shopping in awhile.”

“Perfect.”

With that, they head towards the outdoor mall.

--

They shop and find that they both have similar styles and tastes for fashion. Instead of spending a lot of money, Yoona finds that Yuri is quite the bargain shopper.

Neither of them mentions art or the project at all. They just enjoy the day with no worries on their minds and happiness in their hearts.

They’re in a clothing outlet, browsing around the accessory section.

“Here.” Yuri slips on a simple navy blue hat onto Yoona’s head. “It looks good on you.”

“Huh? Does it?”

Yoona turns to look in the mirror. She likes the comfortable feel and casual look of it.

“Yup. Do you want it?”

Yoona shakes her head.

“Mhh, but I think I’ve spent enough today.”

“Alright.”

Yuri slips the hat off and turns in the direction of the cashier instead of putting it back where it belongs.

“Huh? What are you doing Yuri?”

Yoona’s hand latches around her arm and it causes Yuri to look back at her.

“Buying it for you.”

Yoona waves her free hand up in protest.

“No, no. Please don’t!”

Yuri just smiles at her.

“You gave me a gift. Let me repay you.”

“No, you don’t have to.”

Yuri just smiles that charming smile.

“It’s going to be summer time soon and you’ll get hot. You’ll want a hat.”

That smile makes her smile back goofily and she gives up resisting.

--

After shopping, they eat a simple lunch at a local café called The Temptations of YoonTi. It’s a strange name, but Yoona figures there must be a story behind it. Yuri speaks up and breaks her current thought.

“You’re quite the healthy eater.”

Yoona pushes her third plate away and just grins at Yuri.

“Haha, I know. You didn’t get to see how much I can really eat when we first met since it was an arranged dinner.”

“Looking back now, that steak wasn’t so great.”

Yoona nods.

“You think so too? Glad I’m not the only one.”

This causes Yuri to laugh lightly.

“So what would you like to do now?”

“Ah… I don’t know. I picked shopping earlier, so why don’t you pick this time?”

Yuri ponders for a moment before speaking.

“Movie?”

“Sounds good.”

--

As they leave the movie theatre, Yoona is a little sad to see the sun setting. She doesn’t want the day to end.

“Tired?”

Yoona shakes her head.

“I’ve still got some energy left. Did you like the movie?”

“Yeah. They did a pretty good job fitting the book into the movie without losing too much authenticity. Hmm… how about some ice cream?”

“Funny, I was just craving some.”

--

They decide to enjoy their ice cream at the park. The sun has already set and people have gone home to sleep, but the two of them can’t seem to find the will to go their separate ways just yet. A comfortable silence falls upon them as they eat their ice cream on a set of swings.

It’s been a good day.

She doesn’t feel as restless or worried anymore.

“Thank you for today.”

Yoona kicks her feet lightly, pushing herself off the ground to swing slowly.

“You’re welcome. Feeling better?”

The breeze picks up and Yoona feels calm.

“Yeah. A lot better actually.”

Yoona thinks that from all the laughing she’s done today, she should have abs by now. Her cheeks hurt from smiling so much, but she doesn’t mind this kind of pain.

And Yoona likes how Yuri can make her feel this way.

--

The exhaustion from spending the whole day outside catches up with Yoona as she settles herself into Yuri’s car. She starts to doze off as Yuri drives her back to the dorm. Yuri simply lets her sleep while listening to the radio on the lowest volume. In no time, they’re back at the dorm. Yuri chuckles lightly when she sees Yoona still fast asleep.

The younger girl’s hair is shielding part of her face. Carefully, Yuri leans closer and brushes part of her hair back behind her ear. Yoona doesn’t stir at all.

Yuri doesn’t realize that she’s leaning closer and closer to her. When she does, her eyes fall upon Yoona’s lips. She can feel Yoona’s light breathing on her face. Yuri hesitates to get any nearer, but before she can do anything, Yoona’s eyes open slowly.

Their eyes lock together and after a few seconds, Yuri pulls back, clearing her throat.

“…We’re here.”

Yoona blinks and then glances at the familiar parking lot.

“Mhh. Okay. Thank you for today.”

They say their goodbyes and Yoona leaves the car. After Yoona enters her dorm, Yuri has to control herself from hitting her head on the steering wheel.

It is getting harder for her to hide her feelings for Yoona.

Thank God she didn’t seem to notice.
