Chapter 5
It turned out that Yoona was not phenomenal in Chemistry. Yoona was decent at it. It was her least favorite subject and one of her weaker areas, but she wasn’t going to admit that to Yuri.
They sat at Yuri’s kitchen table, trying to understand the periodic elements and moles. Tired of staring at numbers, Yoona looked around Yuri’s house. It was her first time inside and she found it to be quite cute and homey.
It was a small house, perfect for just Yuri and her father. There weren’t very many pictures on the walls, but paintings instead. Everything was very clean and organized. In the corner of the living room was a bookshelf lined with many books and fashion magazines. On the bottom shelf, Yoona noticed the large quantities of sketchbooks.
“Yul, are all of those your sketchbooks?”
Yoona pointed at the bookshelf as Yuri just nodded. Yoona’s eyes widened as she tried to count how many there were.
“How many are there?”
“Nineteen.”
Yoona gasped. “That’s a lot!”
“I’ve kept every single one since I was five.”
“Wow! Is every page filled up?”
Yuri nodded.
Soon enough, they were sitting on the living room carpet, looking through Yuri’s sketches and designs. Yoona sat in awe, amazed by the drawings.
“I know I’ve said this before, but, you’re really talented.”
A light red crept onto Yuri’s cheeks. “Thank you.”
Yoona continued looking through the sketches, noticing a certain color pattern.
“Is your favorite color black? A lot of these designs are black.”
“It changes. I really like creating designs using grey and black though.”
“Oh I see…” Silence enveloped them for a few seconds until Yoona called out to her, eyes still on the pages. “Yul?”
“Hrm?”
“When you become famous, can I buy your first design?”
Yuri felt flattered that Yoona had placed a lot of confidence in her skill and talent.
“Yes.”
Yoona grinned, and then picked up another sketchbook. Before she opened this one, she glanced around at the covers of the others, noticing the pattern that was appearing.
“You really like Mickey Mouse a lot.”
Yuri nodded feverishly. “I think he’s adorable.”
“Yeah, he is.”
With hesitation, Yuri spoke again. “I even have the same birthday as Walt Disney.”
“Then, it must be fate.”
Yuri laughed lightly at the remark.
The doe-eyed girl beamed with happiness.
Their conversations were getting longer and more personal.

Day 8
“Alright, kids,” Class president Tiffany Hwang declared over the pulpit. “As you know, our class is putting on the play Cinderella with a twist to it. Today’s the day we decide who to cast for which characters. Place your votes in the ballots.”
Whispers washed through the room.
“Who is she calling ‘kids?’ She’s the same age as us…”
“Picking a Prince will be difficult.”
“Can we make Class President the evil step mother?”
Tiffany glared at the student who made the last remark.
“I am the director and nothing will change that. Now hurry up and vote.”
Yoona chuckled at Tiffany’s antics while Yuri stared at the ballot paper in front of her.
There were only two lead roles along with five or so supporting characters. The rest of the class would be assigned to backstage and minor roles seen fit by Director Hwang.
Cinderella. Who to pick for Cinderella?
Yuri contemplated it deeply while Yoona let out a light chuckle again as Tiffany impatiently barked out more orders to a dozed off student.
Yuri glanced at Yoona, remembering their conversation from a week ago.
“I wanted to be an actress one day.”
This could be Yoona’s chance.
Without hesitation, Yuri scribbled down Yoona’s name.
--
In all honesty, the results weren’t too shocking as most of the popular girls in the class were voted in.
Narrator - Jessica Jung
Cinderella - Im Yoona
Prince - Lee Sunny
Stepsister - Choi Sooyoung
Stepmother - Kim Hyoyeon
Fairy Godmother - Kim Taeyeon
Attendant - Seo Juhyun
Everyone started murmuring and talking amongst themselves.
“Stop.” Tiffany raised her hand as if she was silencing a crowd. “I’m calling for a casting change. I refuse to have Cinderella fall in love with a Prince of Dwarves.”
Sunny shot up from her seat. “WHO ARE YOU CALLING A DWARF?”
“Dramatic as always,” Tiffany retaliated, “Someone get this dwarf out of my sight.”
“I AM ALMOST THE SAME HEIGHT AS YOU.”
Tiffany cocked her head to one side. “Jung, please.”
Jessica shook her head. “Keep treating your cast like this and you won’t even have one ready for the play. But seriously, we can’t have… such a vertically challenged Prince especially since Yoona’s going to be Cinderella.”
Everyone seemed to agree with that argument.
Sunny flared up again. “First of all, I am not a dwarf! Secondly, I am a woman, not a prince. Third... I do admit I am vertically challenged.”
“There,” Tiffany snapped her fingers and pointed straight at Sunny. “She said it herself. She’s not a prince. Sooyoung, I’m switching your role with Sunny’s.”
Sooyoung raised her extremely elongated limb in the air. “Are you making that decision based on the fact that I’m the only one in this class taller than Yoona?”
“10 points for Gryffindor. I’m doing it because of that and you have short hair so no wig for you.”
Jessica called out to Tiffany. “You’re just being cheap.”
“Shut up, Jung. You were thinking the same thing, but I just have the guts to say it. Budget cuts, my friends, budget cuts.”
Jessica smirked. “Touché, Hwang, touché.”
Tiffany rolled up her papers in front of her and pointed them at Sunny. “Sunny, you can be the stepsister and take your vertically challenged problems out on Cinderella.” She pointed at Yoona.
Sunny started to mumble incoherently to herself.
Yuri laughed lightly in the back of the room.
Was our class always this… strange?
Yoona grinned.
“We sure do have a peculiar class.”
Yuri stopped laughing and stared at Yoona.
Can she read minds or are we starting to think the same things?
Before that thought could progress any further, the bell rung indicating lunch.
--
“Yoona, what’s going on?” Yuri asked as she tugged on Yoona’s shirt.
They both sat in the usual courtyard spot, lunches on the grass, staring at the unusual sight before them.
“Hi.” Tiffany Hwang smiled widely as Jessica Jung sat next to her, holding a clipboard.
“Uh, hello Tiffany.” Yoona greeted back with at tint of confusion laced in it.
Tiffany smiled even wider. “Since Jung is the writer of the play, we’re going around learning about the personalities of the main cast. We want to tailor the roles to each person’s unique personality.”
Jessica nodded as she scribbled onto her clipboard. “We’re doing this in the name of research.”
Tiffany nodded as well as she opened up her lunch bag. “Carry on. Pretend we’re not here.”
Yoona laughed lightly and turned to face Yuri. “I guess it can’t be helped. Sorry about this.”
Jessica’s clear voice cut through the air as she scribbled onto her clipboard. “Very gentle towards Kwon Yuri.”
Yoona blushed at the comment, but continued on. “This is Tiffany Hwang. But I guess you know her since she’s our class president.”
Tiffany smiled again. “I’m your bossy and obnoxious president. Nice to meet you formally, Yuri.”
“Glad you’re finally admitting it.” Jessica commented as she continued scribbling onto the clipboard.
Tiffany shot Jessica a glare, but said nothing as she started to scarf down Jessica’s snacks.
Yoona grinned at their antics and spoke to Yuri again. “And this is Jessica Jung, Tiffany’s counterpart. She’s quieter and calmer than Tiffany. She’s also the only one who can really butt heads with Tiffany and not lose every battle.”
“Butt heads?” Yuri asked, but Yoona had no time to answer as Jessica and Tiffany started talking again.
“Hwang, did you eat all my Pepero?”
“No.” She muffled with her cheeks full of food.
“Liar.”
“I did not. I only ate the last five out of however many they give you in that small box.”
“Hwang! Go buy me another box.”
“No, you do it, you lazy bum.”
“You’re the one who ate them all!”
“I did not!”
Yoona chuckled, facing Yuri again. “Don’t mind them, they’re always like this.”
The blonde and brunette stopped glaring at each other and faced Yuri.
Jessica cleared the air for Yuri. “Don’t take us seriously, Yuri. We’re frenemies.”
What is that?
“Frenemies?” Yuri asked.
“It’s a combination of friends and enemies.” Yoona explained.
“Yeah.” Tiffany glared at Jessica. “As much as this blonde ticks me off sometimes, it’s just how we are.”
“Get my Pepero, Hwang.” Jessica flicked the empty box at Tiffany.
“Shut it, Jung.”
Their banter continued as Yoona’s chuckle distracted Yuri.
“There are many types of friendships out there, Yuri. Let’s just say… theirs is special.”
Yuri glanced back at the blonde and brunette who were now bickering about ice cream.
How strange. Why does…
“Yoona.” Yuri spoke up.
“Hrm?”
“Why does Tiffany call her ‘Jung?’”
“It’s Tiffany’s special nickname for her. In reconciliation, Jessica calls her ‘Hwang.’ They’re the only ones who call each other by those nicknames. It’s part of their special friendship.”
Yuri’s mind flashed back to Yoona’s words last week.
“One of the girls at school had mentioned that nicknames are important. She said that it’s good to give a person you’ve become close with a nickname.”
“Wait, isn’t Jung and Hwang just their last names?”
Yoona chuckled. “While that’s true, it’s the way that they say it that brings a special meaning. Does that make sense, Yul?”
Yuri watched Jessica and Tiffany shout at each other, and then nodded in understanding.
She liked how the nicknames added something special to the friendship.
Then she glanced at Yoona, letting a smile emerge onto her face.
She really liked that.
