“Class,” Mrs. Lee addressed everyone, “Please welcome Jessica Jung.”
Jessica inhaled in a deep breath, trying to calm her nerves. After all, it was her first day at her new school. She breathed heavily through her nose and stepped inside the classroom.
“H-hello. I’m J-jessica Jung.” Jessica said timidly as she bowed to the class.
“Hello Jessica.” The class unanimously replied back to her in a monotone.
Mrs. Lee scanned the classroom, looking for a seat for the new student. “You may take the seat at the vacant chair.” She pointed towards the back of the room.
Relief washed over Jessica when she realized where Mrs. Lee was pointing. She was thankful it was the back of the classroom.
It would mean less attention towards her.
**
Jessica put her books away as the school bell rang indicating the start of lunch. When she turned to grab another book, she was greeted with the sight of two girls walking towards her.
Please don't -
“Hey, I’m Yuri.” One of the girls approaching greeted Jessica with a friendly tone. She stretched out her hand before Jessica for a handshake.
Instead of introducing herself, Jessica bit the bottom of her lip, focusing her gaze on the desk.
“Okay…” Yuri drew back her hand, slightly hurt. She looked to her left at the doe-eyed girl standing next to her.
“Um… I’m Yoona.” The doe-eyed girl said, attempting to break the awkwardness among them.
Jessica gulped. She was never comfortable with introductions that she always ended up avoiding eye contact.
“So… where are you from Jessica?” Yuri tried to make another friendly approach.
Jessica sunk lower into her seat. She felt very uncomfortable right now. She kept her gaze on the desk.
Yuri turned to look at Yoona again. Yoona just shrugged her shoulders.
“Want to eat lunch with us?” Yoona asked.
“T-thank you… but I’d rather stay alone.” She answered in a small whisper. It didn’t sound rude. Her delicate tone just showed her shy side. Jessica just wanted to be left alone in peace.
“Well, if you need anything Jessica, just let us know.” Yuri kindly said. She understood Jessica’s desire to want to keep to herself.
The two girls walked away, leaving Jessica to her thoughts.
**
The last period of the day was Study Hall for Jessica. She felt relieved as she took her seat.
Finally. Some time to rest.
Jessica hunched over and laid the right side of her face on the cool, hard surface of the desk.
Her right arm extended towards the top edge of the desk with her hand dangling off of it. Her left arm laid on top of the desk with her left hand curled up in a fist. She shut her eyes and instantly fell asleep.
**
“Hey.”
It was a distant voice, but Jessica chose to ignore it.
“Wake up.”
A persistent one.
Shake.
A hand, shaking her shoulder lightly.
“Hey!”
Shake.
The voice was louder and the shake was slightly harder.
Jessica was about to say, “Five more minutes,” but didn’t as soon as she realized where she was. She sat up straight and gasped. She looked around the classroom.
It was empty.
Except for the girl next to her.
"Hi."
Jessica said nothing.
"I wasn't sure if you wanted to sleep more, but seeing how school ended 42 minutes ago, I thought I should wake you up." The unknown girl said delicately.
Again, Jessica said nothing.
“I’m sorry. Was I... not supposed to wake you up?”
“It's fine. Thank you… um-“ Jessica whispered.
The unknown girl broke into a megawatt smile.
“Tiffany. I’m Tiffany.”
Jessica did not respond. She looked at the wall clock to avoid Tiffany’s gaze. The time caught her attention.
3:42 P.M.
Jessica gasped again. She would have to run to make it to the bus stop. Quickly, she grabbed her back pack with her right hand, stood up and strapped it over her shoulder. Tiffany stepped back and watched with amusement at Jessica’s actions.
“Thank you again for waking me up.” Jessica bowed and hurriedly ran out the door.
“That was awkward.” Tiffany muttered to herself.
She dug into her pocket with her right hand and pulled out a Lindor milk chocolate truffle.
“Oh well.” Tiffany said as she unraveled the creamy chocolate and popped it into her mouth.
**
“Darn. I thought you forgot about work.” Wooyoung teased Jessica when she entered the restaurant.
Jessica smiled awkwardly at her brother’s remark. She unraveled her scarf and made her way towards the employee’s lounge. Wooyoung followed Jessica to the lounge, but stopped as soon as she closed the door behind her. She took off her coat, placing it on the coat rack together with the scarf. She then grabbed a white dress shirt and undressed herself.
Wooyoung leaned onto the wall next to the lounge with his arms crossed.
“How was the new school?” He asked curiously.
“Was okay.” Jessica said as she buttoned the dress shirt up.
“Made any friends? Anything exciting happen?”
Jessica thought of Yuri and Yoona’s friendly attempt to befriend her.
She shook her head.
“No and no.” Jessica replied as she grabbed a vest, slipping her arms into it.
“Are your classmates treating you well?” He asked worriedly.
“They’re nice people.” Jessica responded as she changed into work pants.
“You’re probably being shy like always.” He concluded. “Are your classes hard?”
“No, they’re fine. I can keep up.”
“Don’t forget our agreement.” Wooyoung reminded her.
“Of course. If I keep up with my studies at school, then I can come and help you out here.” Jessica opened the door, ready to work.
**
Jessica and Wooyoung had arrived home near midnight. It may have been the first day of senior year in that school for Jessica, but that did not stop her teachers from giving her loads of homework. She sat at her desk and turned the lamp on. She flipped open the textbook and began writing.
It wasn’t easy for her to balance work and school, but it was something that she had to do. Wooyoung needed her help around the restaurant, but he hated it. He was aware of his sister’s shy personality, resulting in her having difficulties working there. But the restaurant needed all the help it could get during the night. With its homey ambiance and great food, it attracted a lot of people. It was always busy, packed with regular customers.
They argued about it for a while, but eventually reached a compromise. A compromise which caused Jessica to sacrifice the formidable reputation of her old school and to transfer to Soshi High School, which offered an extra hour of sleep as compensation to Jessica as the new school started at 8 A.M.
**
Jessica yawned as Mrs. Lee continued her lecture. Last night had been a busy night for the restaurant.
Tap. Tap. Tap.
Jessica tapped her fingers idly on the desk with her left hand. She had her right arm propped up on the desk with her head resting in her palm. Her gaze remained on the window as Mrs. Lee continued her lecture. Jessica tried to keep herself awake by tapping on the desk and counting the snowflakes.
It wasn’t working very well.
Thirty-two… Thirty-three… Thirty-four… Jessica mouthed silently. Her eyes darted from the left side of the window to the right as she tried to keep up with the rapid snowfall. She continued to do so until she started to get dizzy.
Eventually, she gave up the impossible task. She laid her head down and slowly closed her eyes.
**
A distant voice reached Jessica’s ears as she felt a little tug at her arm. Instinctively, Jessica shut her eyes tightly in an attempt to go back to sleep. The voice slightly louder called out again to Jessica.
Now she felt herself being shaken by the owner of the voice, she assumed.
Why couldn't this person just leave her alone?
Deciding to give the person a piece of her own mind, Jessica sat up in her seat reluctantly and opened her eyes only to be met with the sight of Tiffany smiling at her.
The words died in her throat as she watched Tiffany take a seat in front of her.
Jessica’s eyes darted to the wall clock.
3:30 P.M.
“Was it a bad idea to wake you up at an earlier time than yesterday?” Tiffany asked softly.
“It’s fine.” Jessica avoided eye contact.
Tiffany smiled softly; Jessica saw it in the corner of her eye.
“That’s good. I was a little worried since you seemed to be in a rush yesterday.”
Jessica said nothing in response. Instead, she straightened her shirt out and the edge of her skirt. She grabbed her backpack.
“Are you leaving already?”
Jessica nodded.
“Is this my thank-you?” Tiffany joked.
Jessica flushed.
“Thank-you.” She felt embarrassed for not saying it earlier.
“Would you like to chat with me as a thank-you gift?”
“No thank-you.” Jessica muttered.
“Sit and chat with me.”
Jessica glanced at the clock again. She had a few minutes to spare before the bus arrived.
“Please…”
“Okay.” She set her backpack back down onto the floor.
Tiffany dug into her pocket and pulled out a Lindor milk chocolate truffle.
“Would you like some chocolate?” She held it out for Jessica.
Jessica shook her head.
“No thank-you.”
Tiffany smiled, and then unraveled it. She popped it into her mouth and chewed slowly.
Jessica shifted her gaze onto the snowfall outside.
Tiffany also turned to face the window. She swallowed her chocolate and attempted to start a conversation.
“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?”
Jessica just nodded again.
Awkward silence filled the room.
Tiffany turned away from the window, and played with the red wrapper of the truffle.
“Are you new here?”
“Yes.”
“How do you like the school?”
“It’s okay.”
Jessica glanced at the clock.
“I have to go to work.” Jessica grabbed her backpack and abruptly stood up.
Tiffany just smiled at her.
“Okay. Good-bye.”
Jessica said nothing, and rushed out of the door.
Tiffany turned around, facing the window to watch the snow again.
“Oh! I forgot to ask her about her name.”
**
“Made any friends yet?” Wooyoung repeated the question from yesterday. He was leaning on the wall again, making small chat with his sister.
Jessica stopped midway with the buttons on her dress shirt. She furrowed her eyebrows together and thought back to the day’s events.
Was Tiffany a friend now since they shared a brief conversation?
Jessica shook her head.
Of course not.
“No.”
**
Even with the extra hour of sleep, Jessica still felt drained by the end of the new school day. The restaurant had been busier than usual last night. As soon as the bell rang, indicating the start of Study Hall, Jessica fell asleep.
**
Is she sleeping again today?
Tiffany thought to herself as she stood in front of Room 212.
After Tiffany pulled the sliding door open, a smile formed onto her face. She casually walked towards the sleeping figure, and then stood to the left of the desk.
It amused Tiffany how the girl seemed to always sleep in the same position; right side of her face on the desk, right arm laid straight with her right hand dangling off the top edge of the desk, and left arm on top of the desk with her left hand curled up in a fist.
Tiffany placed her hand on the sleeping figure’s shoulder and shook it lightly.
“Hey.”
The sleeping figure did not move.
Tiffany had expected that.
She crouched down to get a better view of the girl’s face.
“Hey. Wak-“ Tiffany stopped talking once she set her eyes onto the girl’s face.
Tiffany had not expected what she saw.
A light giggle escaped her lips.
“Cute.”
**
Surprisingly, Jessica did not wake up to the sound of Tiffany’s voice. Jessica woke up on her own will. She glanced up at the clock.
3:35 P.M.
She looked around the classroom, expecting to see Tiffany.
But she did not.
After blinking a few times, her senses started to kick in. She could feel the sticky drool on her face.
“Gross.” Jessica murmured to herself as she wiped her chin with the back of her right hand.
It wasn’t until after she was done wiping her face that she realized a pink handkerchief was tied to her hand. She turned her hand over a couple of times, examining the pink cloth. It had a patterning of yellow cross stitching across the pink background.
As she turned her hand over for the 4th time, something caught her attention in the corner of her eye. She set her hand down and looked down at the top left corner of her desk. She blinked a few more times as she stared at the object.
It was a Lindor milk chocolate truffle.
