Chapter 11
Day 27
Yoona sat at her desk in her bedroom, head resting on her forearms as she stared at her cell phone in front of her that was adjacent to her paycheck.
The Rilakkuma phone case made her smile happily, but then she frowned when her eyes landed onto the paycheck.
It was here.
The day that she’d pay off her debt to Yuri was here.
Now there would be no reason to walk Yuri home, to stay by her side constantly or to eat lunches with her.
Of course, they were friends now and could probably continue what they were doing. But something inside of Yoona yearned for something more.
Yoona groaned, knowing exactly what she was feeling.
“I’ve fallen for her.”
She eyed the cellphone again, fears setting in.
“But has she fallen for me?”
It was all confusing. The way that Yuri had opened up to her in the last month had made her very happy. The way that Yuri had treated her had made her question whether it was just a friendly gesture or if there was something more.
After all, she knew that Yuri did not treat Jessica or Tiffany or Hara the same way she did for her.
She bit her lip.
“I need to know.”
With some anxiety, she dialed Yuri’s number, but faltered when she heard the other girl’s voice.
“Yoong?”
Yoona’s eyes glanced at the paycheck again and she sighed inwardly.
“I have the paycheck. I can pay for your glasses now.”
They worked out when Yoona could take Yuri to the eye doctor’s.
Today was not the day she would confess to Kwon Yuri.

Day 28
Yoona’s heart pounded and thumped in her ears as she walked alongside Yuri to school.
I want to know.
Yuri spoke first as Yoona continued debating within.
“I think I’m going to get contacts.”
“Yeah?”
Yuri nodded. “I kind of like this. I’ve worn glasses for so long so it’s nice to not have them on my nose every day.”
Yoona smiled. “I’m sure you’ll like them a lot better than glasses.”
I want to know.
“Yul.”
“Hrm?”
Yoona was getting more nervous about this than the play.
“Do you -“ She paused, too afraid to ask so she opted out for something else, something more subtle. “Do you think I could still walk you to and from school after you get your contacts?”
Yuri’s expression was of shock and she waved her hands up in protest.
“That’s a lot of trouble for you.”
“It’s okay… because I want to stay by your side.” She said the last sentence quite softly and anxiously waited for a response from Yuri.
Yuri had a look of worry on her face, but soon changed to gratitude.
“I want to stay by yours too.”
It made Yoona’s heart soar, but she still wasn’t sure if it was said in a friendly manner or something more.
I want to know.
Today was also not the day she would confess to Kwon Yuri.

Day 29
Without too much difficulty, Yuri learned how to put contacts in her eyes as they sat in the eye doctor’s office.
Yuri blinked thrice, amazed at the clarity of the world in front of her.
“Everything is so crisp and clear.”
Dr. Kim smiled as he handed her the contact cleaning solution. “Come back in a week for a follow up. We’ll need to see if they irritate you in any way. Okay?”
Yuri nodded as Yoona smiled kindly at the doctor.
They took their leave as Yuri seemed to be in awe at how relieving it was to finally see everything so clearly.
“Do you like them?” Yoona asked as they started walking.
“I do. I’m glad I decided to give them a try.”
“Me too.”
Yoona could see the excitement on Yuri’s face as she looked everywhere.
“It’s so nice to see again.”
This made Yoona laugh. “I’m sure it is.”
Yuri walked ahead, head in the clouds as she continued looking around. It was just the street, but to her it was more than that.
Yoona smiled as she followed behind closely, hand wanting to grab onto Yuri’s and take her to places she’s never seen.
But she knew better than to spring that action.
Today was Yuri’s day to readjust to being able to see. It wouldn’t be the right time to talk about other something important like that.
She just wasn’t sure how long she could be around Yuri without asking for more than just a friendship.
--
Day 30
Yuri smiled happily as the class right before lunch ended. She was able to read the board from afar and didn’t need to copy Yoona’s notes. Most of the students around Yoona and Yuri were already near the door, hungry for some food.
Suddenly, Jessica and Tiffany started bantering in the front of the room about pizza. This caused Yuri to smile. A light chuckle from her right spilled into her ears.
Yoona chuckled at the blonde and the brunette’s antics, causing a wide smile to appear on her face.
“Yoong.”
“Hrm?”
“I liked seeing your smile a lot before, but now that I can really see it, I like it a lot more.”
I have to know.
Yoona’s breath hitched and she couldn’t take it anymore. She turned to face the older girl.
“Yul.”
“Mhh?”
“When you say things like that, my mind wonders.”
“Huh?”
Her heart thumped erratically as she mustered up all the courage she had.
“Yuri, I like you… and maybe it’s selfish, but I want us to be more than just friends.”
Yuri’s eyes widened and her mouth went agape, red creeping onto her cheeks.
Yoona waited anxiously as her eyes tried to read what Yuri was thinking, because she obviously wasn’t saying anything. Time ticked by and Yoona’s hopes were dwindling fast.
Yuri still hadn’t responded.
I’ve scared her.
The lack of response and hesitation convinced her that it was a form of rejection.
“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have sprung that on you out of nowhere.” Yoona stood suddenly, unable to face Yuri. “Sorry, I - I’ve got to go.”
No. I was wrong.
Before she could embarrass herself further she ran out the door, stomach crawling with disappointment instead of hunger.
--
Yuri sat there, awestruck at what had just happened. Too many things were running in her head, especially something called doubt.
Yoona had just confessed her interest in Yuri, causing her to have multiple mixed feelings.
Confusion. Doubt. Worry. Anxiety. And yet… happiness.
“Yoona is so much better than you.” Hyuna’s voice echoed in her head. They may have reconciled, but the words decided to pop up again in that moment for Yuri.
Doubt was winning the battle.
Yoona is different from me. Yoona is patient and kind, hardworking and almost always smiling. Yoona is beautiful inside and out.
Her conscience was kicking in.
Yoona was like your first friend. Do you want to lose that?
Yuri’s jaw tightened as she stood up shakily, wandering the halls, a destination undecided. She just needed to get up and move as her thoughts circled on.
Yoona is everything a girl could want. She’s too good for you.
But I -
You like her, too, don’t you?
…Yes.
But you’re not good enough for her.
…No.
Then don’t even try.
But…
As the internal battle raged on, time ticked away as she got lost in her thoughts. She hadn’t realized that lunch was near over and she hadn’t gotten any food in her stomach. Her shoulder met with another person’s as her eyes were stuck onto the ground.
“Hey. Oh it’s you.” Jessica bit her biscuit stick. “Uh, Yuri?”
Yuri stood still, eyes still lost in thought.
“Yuri?” Jessica waved a hand over the girl’s eyes. Something was terribly wrong.
“Yoona.” Yuri murmured. “She said… she said she liked me.”
“Do you like her?” Jessica bit again into her stick.
“Yes.” It came out a quiet whisper as her hands came together, fingers fidgeting.
“Then why do you look so… upset?”
“Because I - I’m not a good match for Yoona. I’m different from her.” The words were coming out like vomit. “I’m not in her league. She deserves someone like her! Someone who is beautiful and funny and nice and smart and -“
“Yuri.”
Yuri stopped running her mouth and looked up at Jessica.
“Yoona’s the type of girl who has many people chasing after her and yet, she chose to confess to you. Yoona chose you.”
Yuri stood there, quiet as she took in all of Jessica’s words.
Jessica flipped through the pages of her clipboard, reciting the information she had gathered over the last few weeks to Yuri.
“Yoona gets bashful around you sometimes. Yoona looks at you differently than anyone else. When she smiles at you, it’s a smile for you. Did you know she smiles at you with your eyes, too? She’s very gentle and tender towards you.” She flipped to another page. “And you, you’ve opened up to her. You smile at her differently, too. In short, there’s a certain connection between you that’s just special.”
Yuri inhaled slowly, words seeping into her skin as she tried to counter the argument.
But nothing came up.
Jessica stood there, revaluating the situation at hand and her own experiences with love.
There was something about unspoken words, secrets held and told, and special ties to one another without others needing to know. Some relationships didn’t need to be declared out in the open.
That was what she shared with Tiffany because they had known each other for so long.
There was no need to say.
But with Yoona and Yuri, words were what the relationship thrived on. Words added more, outlined situations, words accentuated everything for them. They didn’t know each other like the back of their hands yet. Actions, words, declarations were needed to create a foundation for them.
They were just beginning while she and Tiffany had started so long ago, an end nowhere near in sight. They were rookies thrown out into the field while Jessica and Tiffany were seasoned veterans.
This is what Jessica had concluded as she observed them interact with one another in the past few weeks.
So she carefully picked at her vocabulary, looking for the words that would strike a chord within Yuri the best. When she came to, she looked at her straight in the eyes.
“You’re a fool if you let her go and she’s a fool if she lets you.”
It was cryptic in its own way, but Jessica figures that Yuri is getting some semblance out of it as she watches the hamsters in Yuri’s brain run.
That was all she was going to contribute as match-maker today.
Tiffany’s approach, however, was nowhere near incognito. Out of nowhere, she practically dashed towards Yuri, shook her shoulders and bellowed in her ears three minutes before lunch ended.
“You’re a fool if you let her go and she’s a fool if she lets you!”
The blonde chuckled lightly.
Of course, leave it to Tiffany to say the exact same words as Jessica without consulting her first. Though, the brunette did say it with much more force and aggression than the blonde.
Thankfully, being told twice within a few minutes by different people seemed to jolt Yuri’s senses. Her eyes lit up and she walked back to class with a determination in her steps.
In the courtyard, Tiffany shook her head in disbelief at how dense Yuri was while Jessica snuck up next to her, stating the obvious.
“You didn’t need to be that forceful.”
“You didn’t need to be so subdued.”
Jessica shrugged. “I guess it balances out in the end. Think she understood us?”
“She better have or I’ll shake her again, but upside down instead.”
“I hope she did, for the sake of avoiding that.”
“Let’s get to class and watch the drama unfold.”
“Yes, your Royal Majesty.” She added a curtsy for the sake of annoying Tiffany.
“Shut up, peasant.”
She turned her body to walk towards the door, but Jessica stopped her. She snatched Tiffany’s hand, giving it a light kiss in a royal-like fashion.
“Forgive me, my lady?”
Jessica smirked as Tiffany’s body tensed up. She knew she had just won today’s battle of wooing and quite early in the day, too.
The suave side of Jessica wasn’t shown nearly enough for Tiffany and so she always appreciated it when it appeared.
“Did I ever tell you I love how stupid you are sometimes?”
This was a side of Tiffany that was only shown to Jessica, face slightly red, words softer than usual laced with embarrassment and appreciation.
“Not nearly enough.”
“Well, you’re stupid.”
“Close enough.”
With that, Jessica intertwined their fingers and led the way to class.
--
There was an invisible wall between Yoona and Yuri as they sat side by side, class already started.
Be more courageous.
Logic was telling her that she wasn’t meant for Yoona, that there was someone better out there for her. Logic was telling her what she was about to do was stupid and wrong.
But her heart was telling her to do it, to be more courageous, and to take a leap of faith like Yoona had.
Actions speak louder than words sometimes.
Slowly, heart thumping in her ears, Yuri reached over for Yoona’s dangling hand. She swallowed hard as her hand wrapped around Yoona’s left hand.
Yoona stopped writing at that instant, quickly turning her head to look at Yuri. The older girl was blushing profusely, eyes kept on the piece of paper before her.
Yoona looked down at their hands, noticing how well they fit together. Suddenly, Yuri’s fingers intertwined with hers.
Sheer joy surfaced on Yoona’s face as she decided that she liked this positioning of hands a lot better.
But Yoona didn’t quite understand. Didn’t Yuri reject her an hour ago? But Yuri’s actions right now were contradictory.
“Yul, what does this mean?” Yoona gently squeezed her hand as she faced her, whispering softly.
Yuri did not answer, eyes still fixated on the piece of paper before her, cheeks a burning red.
Was it too much to ask for clarification, for reassurance?
“Do you like me?”
Yuri leaned forward, forehead resting against Yoona’s shoulder. Yoona knew it was an attempt to hide the embarrassment on her face. The older girl was practically having a panic attack for being so bold.
“I like you.”
It was whispered so gently and intimate that Yoona’s face turned into a sloppy grin, heart soaring into the sky. She suddenly had this urge to tease the other girl further.
“Why do you like me?”
Yuri dug her head further into Yoona’s shoulder, not taking the tease well.
Wasn’t this action enough for Yoona? Why did she have to ask Yuri to show even more bravery than she thought she had?
“I’ll tell you one day.”
“Promise?”
Yuri nodded, squeezing Yoona’s hand, not wanting to let go for a long time.
“I promise.”
“I look forward to it.”
Yoona squeezed back, leaning her head to rest against Yuri’s.
She would definitely hold Yuri to that promise, a promise that wasn’t meant to be fulfilled today.
