Lovely piece. I especially like the references to when they first began working 'for real,' how we saw them, at the top of Season 1 in the pilot, when she 'blackmailed him into becoming his partner.' I feel very fond reading that.

My dull brain had trouble at first going back and forth between the present and the flashback, but once I got that, I was fine. Stupid me.

This was well written, and you said a lot using very few words - not an easy task.

As to HH and S6, I've gotten pretty used to being disappointed by what the producers/writers come up with for characters. And I know the "Moonlighting argument" has been used to death, but I can't help but worry that the show would lose its sizzle if B&B *really* got together.

I'm also not naive enough to think the producers/writers care about presenting reality in their shows. What they CARE about is longevity, and ratings, and the Almighty Dollar. If that translates into keeping B&B apart in order to increase the sexual tension between them (thus, the ratings), so be it.

Meanwhile, I'll have writers such as yourself to fall back on for the really good B&B fic!

I always try and avoid wordiness and see how few words I can get away with to say what I want. Glad it worked for you in the end :)

Re. B&B getting together, I'm going to be lazy and cut and paste part of a reply above:
OK, I get that if B&B had fallen madly in love during their first case the show would have been pretty boring and I guess if they didn't bring in outside "love interests" now and then it wouldn't be realistic
So yes, I'm realistic about what lies behind B&B staying apart. But it is becoming ridiculous, how long can two people avoid each other? It would make more sense if the characters were not attracted to each other, but it has been made really clear on the show that they are.

But as you say, there is always fic :)
