Why the Victims Didn't Shoot Back

I feel like before I really get into what I want to say, I need to make a disclaimer that I am actually not against people owning guns. I, personally, dislike guns and it is unlikely I will ever choose to own one. I am in favor of reasonable restrictions on gun ownership based on background checks, and required safety training. AMC Theaters prohibit patrons from carrying firearms in their theaters. Since most people who carry do follow the law they presumably did what they were legally required to do and left the guns at home.

Point taken.

That said, I still question that anyone firing back would have been at all helpful in a dark, smoke-filled theater full of panicked victims with an armored assailant.

Just as an addition to your points, I used to work with an ex-policeman and their gun training included the quickest and most effective way to stop someone who was a danger to themselves and others. The most effective way to stop someone, is to shoot them where it's most likely to kill them. I don't know what point I'm supporting, but it's one of them =)

Perhaps the point that guns are not designed to disable a threat, but to destroy it?

It's hard to tell. I was angry and tired when I wrote this, so it's a bit of a disjointed mess.
