for the crop challenge - nothing BUT cropping the image at all? like not sharpening/clearing up some colours?

as long as you're not physically adding anything to the icon, you're fine.

so just not stock pics added, but any colour modification and extending the background, that's already there, would be ok?

yes - as long as you are not adding anything to the image, as I said before, that's fine. The deadline has passed at this point - I'll give you another couple hours. We really need to get this poll up.
