Sometimes, I manage to convince myself that the world is largely rational, and what isn't is simply holdovers from childhood, beliefs people can't get rid of because of various emotional/they've-done-it-forever reasons, things they've never thought about questioning.

Then I come across things like, holy crap people actually believe this stuff? At ( Read more... )

I'm not sure if going into a pagan store to help people break up is a done-it-forever thing - these are just people who really want something to happen, pass by a pagan store, and think it means big, flashy spells for silly things like that, which it is not.

Doing like, a spell for general protection isn't unreasonable, really not so different from praying, in another religion. It's not serious business basically because they don't threaten hell to anyone who disagrees with them or doesn't follow the bible to the letter. But because it's not so popular and established as Christianity, people think it's silly, which is unfair.

I think the stores are cool, too. I mean, no matter what you believe, at the very worst there's some good smelling soap and incense!

By done-it-forever I was mostly referring to why people hang on to religion, particularly that of their parents and the one they grew up with. That typically doesn't describe paganism.

And, my main objection and wtf reaction was due to the post, where she's like, these spells and herbs and whatever aren't for breaking up relationships but then, people should have more training in getting rid of spirits! Which seriously reside in your basement!(this is in the comments, it just made me wth a little) There's the fun part of paganism and then there's the I seriously believe there is a spirit in my basement whose mood I can affect with spells or whatever and priests need more training with restless spirits paganism. So that's what I mean by srs bsns.

I don't think spells are any sillier than praying; paganism is no more pretend than Christianity. Granted, most of the pagans I know snicker at "fluffy pagans." (But most of the Christians I associate with go "WTF?!" at Fundamentalists and snake-handling cults.)
