Question for the more computer savvy than me

I'm working on building myself a professional web page and I'm not sure what the best option is for hosting. Right now I'm looking at Google Pages - it's free and I could easily link to images on Flickr. A friend of mine has his site there and it's nice. My advice would be the following: before choosing a hosting, you should make a list of what you want to have on your site.
- If you think of a small static page, a free hosting (like google pages) will do fine.
- If you plan to have some kind of content management system on your website, you probably would want something more serious, something with PHP and a MySQL database.

Also, AFAIK with google pages you cannot have a domain name on your own, it will always look like http://yoursitename.googlepages.com which doesn't look very professional IMO...

Ok, I'm going to ask what might sound like a stupid question, but I've never made a web site before. What do you mean my content management system? Thanks.

I think google pages will be all you need. I've built a pretty decent online portfolio with them. computer snobs/web site builders will try to tell you that need something more, but I really think you'll be fine. Besides, you can always build it in google pages, and if you aren't happy with it - THEN hire someone to do it for you. The downsides are that it's apparently a fiasco to get it to show up in search engines...but the importance of that depends on your plans. Do you want people to google costume designer and find you, or do you just want an address to put on your resume/business card and send to people?
