Last year I made a list of my 25 Most Played on iTunes and talked about them. I'm going to do that again, to see what's changed, and whether these songs really reflect my year.
25. The Funeral - Band of Horses
Gorgeous, melancholy yet somehow epic song. On my sad playlist. "And to know you is hard, and we wonder - to know you all wrong."
24. Air on a G String - J.S. Bach
Gorgeous. Also relaxing. I don't know if I've ever listened to this with my eyes open.
23. Try - Nelly Furtado (previously #7)
As I said last year, this song gets me choked up like no other. But I can't decide whether it's sad or uplifting, or both. "Then I see you standing there, wanting more from me, and all I can do is try."
22. Adagio in G Minor - Tomaso Albinoni (previously #8)
There are going to be lots of relaxing songs on this list because I use them to fall asleep on bus rides. Which happens often, being in the band and all.
21. Cabron - Red Hot Chili Peppers (previously #13)
Cute, sexy, with a Latin beat. "I am small but I'm strong - I'll get it on with you, if you want me to."
20. Can't Stop - Red Hot Chili Peppers
My favorite RHCP song of all time. So fun and rock-out-able. Incidentally, the music video is also amazing. "Ten more reasons why I need somebody new, just like you."
19. No Surprises - Radiohead
Bit of a melancholy number, for a few reasons, but simply beautiful. This is the song that made me realize how awesome Radiohead is. "No alarms and no surprises, please."
18. She Wants to Move - N.E.R.D. (previously #25)
Irresistably sexy - you can't help but dance to this one. Great "getting ready to go out" song. "Mister, look at your girl - she loves it."
17. I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor - Arctic Monkeys (previously #17)
Another hot "getting ready" song that definitely makes you dance. "I bet that you look good on the dance floor, dancing to electro-pop like a robot from 1984."
16. I Know What I Know - Paul Simon (previously #11)
As I said last year, this is my favorite Paul Simon song - besides possibly Al - and the one that most reminds me of my childhood. So much fun. "She looked me over and I guess she thought I was all right - all right in a sort of a limited way for an off night."
15. Black Dog - Led Zeppelin (previously #24)
Gritty-sexy, and my favorite Led Zep song. "I don't know, but I been told: a big-legged woman ain't got no soul."
14. A Lack of Color - Death Cab for Cutie (previously #20)
As I said last year, I love songs whose lyrics begin with the word "and" - as though you're jumping right into the middle of a conversation. "And when I see you, I really see you upside down. But my brain knows better - it picks you up and turns you around."
13. In the Waiting Line - Zero 7 (previously #4)
Great for nighttime driving and emotional detachment. "Do you believe in what you feel? Doesn't seem to be anybody else who agrees with me."
12. Californication - Red Hot Chili Peppers (previously #12)
I'm always surprised to see this one on the list, but it is a very good song. "Little girls from Sweden dream of silver screen quotations."
11. Grace Kelly - Mika (previously #6)
This is my JAM. Pure, exuberant, dance-around-the-room fun. "Why don't you like me? Why don't you like me without making me try?"
10. You Can Call Me Al - Paul Simon
If there's any song that screams "Brown Band," this is it. I don't think I'll ever listen to it the same way again. Which is not a bad thing. "He looks around, around; he sees angels in the architecture spinning in infinity. He says 'Amen! Hallelujah!'"
9. Goodbye Pork Pie Hat - Charles Mingus (previously #1)
The king has been dethroned! Still love this song, because it's incredibly meaningful to me - I played the solo tenor sax part senior year of high school, and have written a couple of pieces about the experience.
8. Eyes Like Yours (Ojos Asi) - Shakira (previously #3)
Great song, but may hold less meaning in the future, since I've already conquered that arena. "Tearing down windows and doors, and I could not find eyes like yours."
7. Pavane for Dead Princess - Maurice Ravel
6. The Field of the Dead, from Alexander Nevsky - Sergei Prokofiev
5. Après une rêve - Gabriel Fauré
"Dans un sommeil que charmait ton image, je rêvais le bonheur, ardent mirage."
4. The Maid with the Flaxen Hair - Claude Debussy
3. Clair de Lune - Claude Debussy (previously #21)
2. Arabesque - Claude Debussy
1. Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun - Claude Debussy (previously #10)
This group of the top seven is rather depressing. A few were talked about in Gooley's class. All are gorgeous, cause me to fall asleep instantly, and remind me profoundly of him. Which is why I haven't touched that playlist in quite some time.
