Seems like I got a good bit done today. Went to the official grad school orientation and was bored out of my mind. Luckily my program set us up pretty well so it was all just repeating information. I'm all registered and paid. I got all the classes I wanted, which is pretty sweet. After Wellesley class chaos I expected to have to take random ( Read more... )

Hooray for need-less lj posting, I promise they will stop soon
Well let's hope not, I'm so glad you're posting! I really need to muster the attention span to post an update soon.

Well I guess 'stop' was an exageration... I'm just hoping I can cut back from the daily posting I seem to be doing lately. I meant to tell you, on my way to orientation I was starting to get nervous so I popped in Unwed. All you lovelies got me relaxed and smiling for the day ahead :) Amazing that a CD can not only be lovely but hold good memories strong enough to get me out of any funk!

You know what? I <3 your lj posts as well. It's like acceptable stalking and I love it. Plus I'm horrible with most modes of communication so this way I can be up-to-date with you almost always :) Classes start Wednesday. This first week will be way reduced when it comes to schedule time, because there will be no labs or TAing or research. Just classes. Then the fun stuff starts. If you have any teaching tips (like how to make them actually listen?)I would love to hear them. I'm kinda floundering around as I am NOT QUALIFIED! But welcome to State University, right?

Hmmm... well, I basically sucked at teaching, so I'm not sure I have any really good tips to give!

I guess the biggest things that I learned are to always make your expectations for the students as clear as possible, and then hold them accountable for those expectations. Give positive reinforcement for good behaviors rather than focusing on giving negative reinforcement for bad behaviors.

But it's a lot different between high school and college, too. In college, students are more likely to be there because they want to be there. In high school, they HAVE to be there. So hopefully that will mean they'll be more willing to listen and participate!
