OKay....I've checked around and asked a lot of different folks about the best way to get my books out there, and so far, the most popular response is Myspace. Ugh. I have such ISSUES with myspace...

Does anyone have any advice/ideas/thoughts about this being a good way to go?

I have a myspace page, but I don't think it is the best way to network for your books. I've had far better responses by joining relevent yahoo groups, eg literarynymphschat and joyfullyreviewed they tend to run specific promo days where authors of a particular genre can post snippets, run contests etc and get some buzz going for their books.

I'm also a member of glee.com which is a nice site for promoting books, they even have a group there that will feature published authors.

Facebook can be helpful, but with both glee and facebook, be aware of the Terms of use and don't run foul of them.

Hope these help.

Ah, the eternal problem... does one compromise one's worldview in order to get one's work off the ground?

Personally I don't think most people who are big readers spend huge amounts of time on myspace. Myspace is more a place for music, really. And it's great for music, too, but not for books.

Word of mouth is probably the best. Which isn't helpful, I know. And pretty covers. I know, technically you're not meant to judge a book by its cover, but everyone does it. True story.

Good luck ;)

The thing about myspace is it's so full of...crap. Don't get me wrong, there are writers and agents who use it, but sometimes you log in and you've got 50 Friends requests from people you've never met/heard of and who are just pimping their band, 25 comments that are just spam, and 5 event invites for bar events happening in some other state.

Myspace is sometimes (IMHO) the bathroom wall of the Internet.

have you considered facebook?
Joining facebook alone gives you multitudes of connections. I have issues with myspace myself, and I'm not a BIG fan of facebook, but I figure we all need to be part of SOME internet social networking phenomenon, and facebook seems slighlty less uh...disgusting to me.

I guess I'm having issues with the number of different blogs I'm faced with. I don't want to spend all my time blogging when I have novels to write...and so facebook and myspace seem like another time black hole.
Question for you...
Do you have a nickname other than...well...god?

My name is Bethany :o)

But as far as the username goes, I don't think I've aspired to God yet. I'm the muse.

It's interesting. Women aren't seen as creators of their ideas, merely vessels to carry them. In most cases with this silly patriarchal culture, women who create are not seen as the masters of their creation, but as the angel that guides it. Even then, our society is biased, and the creations of men hold more merit.

I would rather be the God of my own work, but I've worked as a performer for years. I have been the perpetual muse to so very many men. I'd rather be the God.
