I should have done this weeks ago, of course. Actually start this journal thing. But I never expected that I'd suddenly be zooming off to Western Massachusetts to see Day Zero at a film festival, AND meet two lovely LJers

Congratulations! You're off to a fine start. I'm amazed the you already know how to do this: yeuxdebleu because that stymies many newbies.
The LJ cut is explained very well in FAQ #75. It's used mostly if you have a long entry so the bulk of the entry is "behind the cut" as they say, and doesn't take up a lot of space when people are reading their friends page. It looks like this without the *'s I'm putting in so it doesn't make an actual cut.
<*lj-cut text="See more pictures here"*> If you don't put in text of your own, the cut will just say "Read more" as the default. For that you'd just type
<*lj-cut*>
It sounds like you're trying to post photos from the LJ scrapbook. I've never done that. I upload all my photos to Photobucket and post pics from there. Each photo has an HTML code. You copy that code in your entry and Voila! the photo is there

You only need to give credit for a photo if you know it's someone's personal photo....but never re-post such a photo unless you have their permission. Things like photoshoots, movie stills, paparazzi photos aren't usually credited. But if you know the information, it doesn't hurt to post it. Some people like very much to have as much info about a photo as possible, such as the name of the photographer, date, place, event, etc.
Congratulations on your first post!! You're doing great!!
I see yeuxdebleu already told you how to do a LJ cut. I post pics all the time using the LJ scrapbook. When I'm in the area where I create a post, I click on the "insert image" above the box where I type my post and it brings up a window. I click on the second option and then just have to find the photo on my HD, select it (which takes me back to that first window with the pic I selected and then hit upload. That will put a bunch of words and symbols representing your pic in the box where you type your post. If you hit "preview" you'll see what will actually post in your LJ. If it's a big pic, LJ will automatically post it smaller, but it you click on it twice you'll see it full size.
Don't know if any of that will make sense - I know a lot of people on my flist use photobucket or other sites for their photos, but I still use the LJ scrapbook. Hope this is helpful!!
Looking forward to reading your report - and you're very welcome for the VHS movies - hope you enjoy

It made sense to me and I appreciate your posting it. I've always wondered how to use the LJ scrapbook.

However, I think I'd better stay with Photobucket. It would take me forever to upload a pic from my hard drive.
We need Elijah to find you a song called the Dialup Blues (since he's into that style of music now)!!
Glad you found it helpful - but you do have an advantage with Photobucket. I can't post pics in comments with the LJ scrapbook method. One of these days I'll have to get into PHotobucket of one of the others - but for now I just live with that restriction.
Photobucket is free, versatile and easy to use. Whenever you want to take the plunge, just let me know and I'll be happy to help. They also have a tutorial at the site.
I love that icon, too, and have many occasions to use it....unfortunately. *g*
Things have gone 'splained, obviously! I do not need to type much more than HELLO!! :D:D:D! You'll get the hang of things, and quick. I had some trouble back when I first started with my first journal, and that was before all the big-time goodies, in 2001 or so. I never had a paid account until THIS one, and I said, "dude, I want a paid account already." :P It's fun! Once you get the hang of it, it's no big thang. :D So yea. *plops down and starts munching on snacks, watching movies and generally crashing at your place* :D!
