I've meant to do a year in review for a few years now. Given that, doing it four days after the new year started isn't really that bad.
Which TV shows did you start watching in 2013?
I had to go and check my computer for dates of download to be sure when I actually started watching things. So: Avatar: The Last Airbender, Broadchurch, Elementary, Game of Thrones, Hannibal, How I Met Your Mother, Luther, My Little Ponies: Friendship is Magic (which is the only one that I'm going to count of the shows my kids watch, because I'll watch it even if they're not around), SHIELD, Sleepy Hollow. I think that's it, but I feel like I'm missing something...
Which TV shows did you let go of in 2013?
I actually let go of a few this past year, which while not impossible is not super common for me. As of the end of 2013 I have officially released: NCIS, NCIS: LA, Glee, Covert Affairs (Okay, that was 2012, but I released it with PREJUDICE, so I'm including it), The Big Bang Theory. Again, I'm pretty sure I'm missing some. I'll have to think on it.
Which TV shows did you mean to get into but didn't in 2013? Why?
Oh my God, so many. And some of them aren't currently airing, but that doesn't matter because they're sitting there, waiting for me to watch them. And I'm planning on it, but I haven't yet.
Kings, Mysterious Ways, Nashville, Orphan Black, Political Animals, The Wire, The Following, Vikings, Dead Like Me.
Which TV shows am I massively behind on, or have finished airing and I'm midway through and haven't watched the whole thing because of reasons but still intend to watch. Soon. Like, in 2014:
A special category just for me. Because I'm ridiculous. Castle, Chuck, Criminal Minds, Dollhouse, Eureka, Farscape, Flashpoint, Heroes, Human Target, Leverage, Merlin, SGA, Southland, The Mentalist, The Unusuals, White Collar.
Which TV shows do you intend on checking out in 2014?
What new shows? Because okay... the way I watch TV is generally that until I've heard feedback from people I trust, and found out if it's getting picked up for sure, I don't watch them. The only thing I can think of right now that's on that list is Almost Human... and I'm not even sure if it's been picked up yet. I should check that out.
Which TV show impressed you least in 2013?
Teen Wolf. Because it alternates problematic and addictive crack and creator on the bad drugs in a way that makes my head hurt. I'm still there, but I spend a lot of time watching with my hands ready to cover my face because I know that Something I Don't Like Is Going To Happen.
The Big Bang Theory because I just finally could NOT anymore with the way the show presents geeky people, and Amy's creeptastic behaviour with Sheldon. I miss Jim Parsons, but it had to be done.
Which TV show do you think you might let go of in 2014 unless things significantly improve?
There are a number of TV shows that I've been hanging onto but not watching, and I haven't really decided if I'm going back (or in for the first time) or not. I don't know if it's so much waiting for them to significantly improve, or deciding if I just don't feel like being invested in them anymore or at all--that's how the NCISes and TBBT got cut.
Shows that are still on the bubble for will I, won't I are: 2 Broke Girls, Arrow, Beauty and the Beast, Hawaii Five-O, How I Met Your Mother, Modern Family.
Which TV show impressed you the most in 2013? Why?
Hannibal. Because WTF, Hannibal?!?! I'm pretty sure that it's tumblr's fault I started watching it, and I didn't think I'd like it because even though I've read Red Dragon and The Silence of the Lambs, it's all a little bit Too Much For Jay, but... oh my God, that's some good television. I also have a lot of faith in the entire creative team in all their dorktastic selves, and I hope they're given the time they need to tell the story they want to tell. (I can't believe I'm watching an NBC show again, haven't I LEARNED by now?)
Which TV shows do you think you'll never let go of no matter how crappy they get? Why?
Something can always get crappy enough for me to ditch it if I feel like the show has gone in a direction that I'm just not comfortable with. I was fathoms deep in love with The West Wing, and I bailed five eps into season five because that was not my show and those were not my characters anymore.
Barring 'this is not my show, these are not my characters', or 'what the FUCK did you just do, are you goddamned kidding me with this shit, oh hell fucking no, I am DONE' (see: Cover Affairs), shows that I expect to stick through regardless of peaks and valleys are: Castle, Doctor Who, Game of Thrones, Elementary, Supernatural, The Mentalist, White Collar.
Shows I watched and loved that aren't mentioned on this list because I started them in another year.
Generation Kill, Teen Wolf (loved is a weird word for this show. I think this show and I are having hatesex), Doctor Who, Supernatural.
***
Your main fandom of the year? Marvel Cinematic Universe, Dragon Age II, Generation Kill. Screw you, meme, I can pick more than one if I want to.
Your favorite film you watched this year? Iron Man III, Thor: The Dark World, From Beginning to End, Blackfish, The Hunger Games.
Your favorite book read this year? I'm so glad I finally read the first two books of The Hunger Games (finishing the third after I see Catching Fire in theatre), and I'm still enjoying my way through A Song of Ice and Fire (I'm midway through Storm of Swords), but my favourite books of 2013 are the continuing adventures of Mercedes Thompson, by Patricia Briggs. Frost Burned came out in 2013, and it sent me on a reread back through everything, which is always fun. So yes--if you like vampires and werewolves but want nothing to do with Twilight? Mercedes Thompson is for you.
Your favorite tv show of the year? I am still really loving Elementary. I thought it was going to be a total hot mess when it was first announced, and it was just not at all what I thought it was going to be, in a good way. It's the show that doesn't disappoint me.
Your best new fandom discovery of the year? 2013 will be known as the year where Tom Hiddleston reduced me to high pitched noises and flailing. I liked him before, but this year he just... *is reduced to high pitched noises and flailing*. Yes. That.
Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year? I always kind of knew that Benedict Cumberbatch was a pretentious dick, but finding out that Martin Freeman was problematic as hell when he opens his mouth was really fucking disappointing.
Your fiction boyfriend of the year? Tom Hiddleston. No, Robert Downey Jr. No, Jeremy Renner. No, Richard Madden. Oh, the hell. All of them.
Your fiction girlfriend of the year? Natalie Portman (as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be, forever, amen). Also, Jennifer Lawrence, because she's Jennifer Lawrence.
Your biggest squee moment of the year? COULSON LIVES.
Your biggest fan anticipations for the coming year? Sebastian Stan as The Winter Soldier. Is it April yet? Now? Please? COME ON.
