Proms in the Park- Rain stops play. :(

Sep 11, 2011 16:32

So- after I've spent months anticipating the first ever Proms in the Park from Caerphilly, a torrential downpour just before the programme got started at 7:30 meant it had to be called off. :(

Sitting in the Owain Glyndwr playing fields with Caerphilly Castle as a backdrop, we knew it may not be a dry night- everyone was sporting, raincoats, wellies, waterproofs and had brollies at the ready- the Council was even giving out free plastic kagouls. There was one shower that had everyone rushing to gather up their picnic rugs and huddle under umbrellas. Then it passed over and we all sat down again. But we only got to see the pre-prom entertainment of the Caerphilly Big Band and Only Boys Aloud before the heavens opened and the huge canvas covering over the stage couldn't cope. Through a shaft of light at the back of the stage, we could see a stream of water pouring down through the canvas roof. When the rain stopped the organisers announced they would let us know in 15 minutes, whether the show could go on, after they checked the damage. But apparently the generator had broken down and more thunder and lightening was anticipated, so we all sang one rendition of Cwm Rhondda (Guide me O Thou Great Redeemer ) as we packed up and then squelched our way home.

It was galling to sit at home watching the other venues- Hyde Park enjoying a beautiful evening and sensible Scotland and Ireland in their concert halls. We should have been listening to music from 'Merlin' and 'Harry Potter', Mozart, Puccini, and the 'Go Compare' man. :p

I hope they try again next year in Caerphilly- its been held in Swansea for the last 5 years but this was the first time for Caerphilly to host it.

cancellation, proms in the park caerphilly, typical welsh weather., rain
