Also, Christmas is always going to be Jesus's birthday, and people are always going to celebrate it--Christian or not. Christmas essentially insures that all the world will know who Jesus is. Not only that, but Christmas isn't the only Holiday around this time. Sad to say, Jesus, but it isn't only about you.
You know, for some of us, Christmas is about winter, love, and community spirit. Communal spirit? No, that sounds weird. My English is no longer all that great. Anyway, the spirit of sharing with one's fellow man and what have you. Japan uses a lot of large, colorful mushrooms for Christmas. I'm not altogether convinced that I'm comfortable with that... but I don't really know why... -M
That's kinda what I meant, though. Even if Christmas is supposed to be about Jesus, and even if it began as celebrating his birth, there's so many people - like you - who don't believe in him or some who don't believe very strongly, but still celebrate Christmas. And so even though it began with Jesus, it's developed into something that means togetherness and sharing, to people of all beliefs. (And as a Christian, I believe that Jesus would be very happy with that, and not a snotty bitch. Which is kinda what I meant by the whole honoring thing.)
I think "communal" is used when you're sharing it with lots of people, usually strangers. Like a communal bathroom.
And nothing says winter, togetherness, and sharing more than psychedelic mushrooms!
well, but it didn't actually historically start with Jesus. People were celebrating it, Halloween, Easter.. pretty much every one of those holidays under different names for a long time before the days and traditions themselves took on Christian significance. Yeah, communal is NOT the word I needed for that. OK, I'm wasting my precious internet time! Well, not wasting. But I have to get to class soon and this Very Communal Computer Room is not very comfortable... I haven't sent anyone cards, but have a Merry Christmas!
Mary, though one can argue that all these Christian holidays were celebrated in one form or another before Christianity actually ever came about, it would not entirely be true
