This story is a sequel to The Light of Distant Skies, although all you need to know from the first installment is that Spock is married to Uhura as well as a Vulcan woman in order to satisfy cultural and political pressure, and that they are involved with the Teslau project, an initiative designed to increase the Vulcan birthrate in order to stave off population decline.
