I've never seen the movie, but after this I'm going to have to track down a copy. Terrific, as always, lind. A Jim Kirk doomed to underachieving is a depressing thought. At least he has Bones there, warts and all, to keep him company. Love Tybee island. Had a great margarita there!
Some TOS fans complained when AOS came out that Kirk would be Kirk (a hero) no matter how different his early life would have been, and that the AU episodes of the series proved that. I'm not so sure--I think life is comfortable enough these days that Jim could keep himself busy without pressing on to great achievements. At least he's got Bones to keep him company.
I've never been to Tybee Island--it sounds like fun!
AU eps? For the life of me I don't remember any young Kirk stories. Young Spock yes, but not young Kirk. It has always bugged me that until Reboot we never knew much at all about Kirk and McCoy outside of their Starfleet identities.
In the spirit of the multiverse, it makes sense that even for a character like Kirk, if he happened to be born in the wrong century, under the wrong circumstances, then perhaps the times wouldn't be right for him to rise to greatness even though the raw potential is there. That's actually a thought that frequently crosses my mind when I'm people watching.
Thank for the heart, amiga. It was a lovely gift to receive after what was a very long and trying day. I hope you had a really nice Valentines' Day. Just think, tomorrow: discount chocolate!!!
Well, not AU exactly, but the eps where they travel to different times and places. Kirk generally managed to remain awesome, either becoming the leader or getting the girl or becoming the leader, no matter where he landed. I agree with you, though, and I think of a sentence from Owen Wister's The Virginian: "Fecund nature begets and squanders thousands of these rich seeds in the wilderness of life."
That's an excellent point about not having backstories in TOS. Spock definitely had some family trauma along the way (surprise!half brother) but Kirk and McCoy's backgrounds were...normal, I guess, for Starfleet officers.
I'm sorry your day was dismal! I fared better, I'm glad to say, but I'm completely on board with the chocolate (especially the 1-pound box of Godiva one of our execs parked in the kitchen). I hope your week gets better.
The movie is only a dim memory, but the story was great. The mistakes and the anger and under (or over) all the love they have for one another. Very cool premise rendered with elegance and emotion.
gah - so good! i love how you just drop these amazing fics on us, with hilarious lines like she’d waved her palms over the head of a disgruntled tabby and said he’d been the Duchess of Polignac’s cat in a past life and that his hairballs were caused by trauma from the Revolution.
using spock as the "science" behind the procedure was brilliant
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was one of those movies that i enjoyed, but can never watch again because i have this impression of it being somewhat emotionally traumatizing
loved the past memories - aww little Bones! and the porn scene was priceless :-D
I'm so glad you enjoyed the porn scene--it really took me back. Not that I ever looked at porn delivered over a dial-up modem, hrm hrm.
The funny thing about Spock is that in the movie, the brain meddling really is science! But I knew Bones would poke holes in it, so I made it science masquerading as pseudo-science. I'm happy you thought that was a good choice!
excellent fare, especially for something that a friend of mine disdainfully used to call 'VD'!
love the characters you created and i'll totally be stealing your line about why that 'holiday' exists to cheer up another friend, who enjoys it about as much as i do, which is not at all :@P
