I'm in awe of your story because I can totally see this conversation taking place in that itty-bitty room with McCoy wearing those god-awful whites, and yeah, Jim has it exactly right by asking, "WTF?" And to come to and give back amazingly sassy but oh-so Jim Kirk answers to the doctor armada. And when McCoy loses it in front of Jim, well, ...damn allergies.
A gorgeous imagining of a space that is important and necessary for us who love these characters and this verse and most especially, this cynical doctor with a big heart who loves his captain immeasurably. Love it!
I can't thank you enough for this and each of the other lovely comments--this one was a bear to write, for reasons I know you understand. I appreciate your support so much!
(And yeah, Karl can wear the hell out of anything, but THAT was pushing it.)
Ah, man. I hurt for Bones throughout this whole story. Having to wade through the politics and undercurrents going on in Starfleet while trying to keep his sanity as he waited...Damn.
I loved how Jim's first word was "shit" followed up closely by "Bones." Even though it was probably Jim's standard responses when finding himself waking up in any type of hospital, I'm going to think it was because Bones was one of Jim's first and main thoughts.
I also laughed at Jim's comment about the new "dandy" Medical uniforms, although I think he should reserve his option until he sees the back view of it. I think Bones's ass looks mighty fine in it. ;-)
I postponed my packing until I finished this whole story, so I better get back to it. Thanks for sharing this with us! It's nice to know what happened in those 14 days.
Thank you SO much for delaying your packing for the story! I hope you're off to somewhere wonderful. It was exceedingly nice of you to leave such a detailed comment, and I really appreciate it.
*waves* Er, hi. I've been out of this fandom for several years, but I've recently begun rereading a bunch of old Trek fic in a wave of nostalgia, and I was super-excited to see a fic from you that I hadn't read! This was gorgeous. I particularly liked the scene with David McCoy, and the conversations between Bones and Spock. And the ending is beautiful. ♥
How nice to hear from you, bb! I too have been only a passive observer in fandom for the last few years. Fandom itself has moved on and this story was about as far as I could go into STID before noping out.
I hope you liked the new movie--it certainly made me nostalgic for K/M fandom of yore. I would have been writing missing scenes for the birthday drinkathon before leaving the theater!
