I love this for so many reasons - Kirk being a captain under more normal circumstances and the tension of compressing that maverick genius into allowable parameters, that tense tender awkward new Official Relationship that is not all hearts and flowers and intuitive ease, the logistics to be worked out in having a personal relationship in a professional situation (I love that Jim is the one who's upset by the lack of privacy and McCoy is the one who's worried about how it impacts people's perspective of his professionalism, because so often you see it the other way around in fic), the Admiral giving a lens for Starfleet's somewhat bemused and uncertain relationship with its new luminary, AND a mission! And the side of Spock/Uhura--I could pretty much recap the fic and say, 'this is what I liked about it.' Awesome. 100% awesome.

In my mind, this particular version of Kirk has a "raised by wolves" thing going on when it comes to relationships--he's not necessarily screwed up or bad at it, he's just never done it before, so it strikes him as something precious and private that he doesn't want to share. I confess I was somewhat influenced by Chris Pine's alleged pathological hatred of the paps.
I appreciate your kind comments so much and I hope you don't mind the shout out at the end, but apart from your generally kick-ass writing, you set the bar for accuracy and "realness" in this stuff. Thank God for Memory Alpha!
Mind? Why should I mind being paid a lovely compliment? <3 And yeah, Memory Alpha is the gold standard, or maybe platinum, of fannish resources. It's kind of mindblowing how much work must have gone into it.

That has a ring of truth to it; sex is one thing, but actual intimacy is another, and I doubt many people have gotten past the layers of defense mechanisms he applies so deftly to deflect people away from potential vulnerabilities.

This is the beauty of the hive mind. I read somewhere that the majority of Wikipedia articles are written by about 5% of the contributors. That's someone's idea of a good time, and I'm grateful.

Very typical of charismatic people who are "performers," don't you think? And very interesting, since I think self-knowledge was one of TOS!Kirk's great strengths.
How did I not read your fic until now??? Travesty! A travesty, I say!
This was amazing (the other two were also amazing -especially the second one, fucking beautiful, loved the relationship dynamics there- but I didn't stop to comment. Had to keep reading, like, desperately). I loved the two bits from Spock's point of view and I really like the relationships between Kirk and Spock, Kirk and Bones, and the three of them together. The staff meeting was also great, it just works on so many levels for me. That's exactly how I would picture them.
There was so much I liked about all three of these fics that I just can't articulate it.
Thank you so much for reading all three (for which you deserve a medal). The staff meeting was fun to write--I really like the idea of Kirk mumbling all the bureaucratic mumbo jumbo while everybody looks at each other wondering who the guilty party is.
Ooh, I loved this! So complicated and mature and loving and sweet and chaotic and professional and.... felt like a very real moment in a very real relationship.
I just blew through this all in one go, and I have to say that it was fantastic. Your characterization is so multi-faceted and complex, and real. I love your Bones. I love their lack of perception when it comes to their emotions, and how understated the revelations are.
Considering that you just blew the doors off my brain with Love Like Ghosts (I was late to the party, I know), I am choosing to take this as a really massive compliment. Thank you.
I never read this series before so I got a good couple of hours of enjoyable reading. Thank you for sharing this with me. And others. But I don't know the others so just me. :)
Edit: I love the well thought out OC, we don't much of those. Thanks.
As for S/C, I'm already so bored with as them the default secondary pairing in every story I read so I'm happy it wasn't here. I like them as friends. Want to go wild, go Chekov/Cupcake. I haven't got anyone to write that yet...
I'm so glad I could help you waste a few hours! I'm glad you liked the admiral; I definitely feel the need for more kick-ass women to make the boys sweat (in the other way).
Chekov/Cupcake?? I think that's begging to be written. Who would be on top, I wonder?
Those were purposeful wasted hours. And I do like background characters and I think writers do automatically use the canon characters for everything in the story when an fleshed out in character OC is a better choice. So I'm always pleasantly surprised when I find one.
If you're serious... Hmm... It took me a while to look past Chekov's age to pair him up so he's older now in my head and in my universe worldview, they been on the ship a while and I see it as a quiet fluffy non-sexual(at first) get together, Cupcake initiated the meeting but Chekov takes the second lead. They slowly learn about each other... I haven't even got to the top/bottom thing.
Basically, I like the slow burn with pairings but S/C is so the dominant pairing as first and secondary pairings that I sit in my little corner and daydream about their fluffy romance. :)

I confess I wasn't that interested in Chekov until I heard Anton's comment on the DVD about him being the most "weird" character. As he is extremely outgoing and endlessly curious, I can see him striking up an unlikely friendship with Cupcake (does he have a canon name, btw?). Cupcake is a great tabula rasa--I think he's supposed to come off like a goon in the movie, but no Starfleet cadet is an all-brawn-no-brains idiot. I would like to see his character fleshed out. Any chance you would get the ball rolling with a little drabble or vignette?
