Race and things

Aug 22, 2006 16:33

Race has been popping up a lot in online blogs. First I find out that Survivor is going to separate the contestants by race (Black, White, Hispanic, and Asian). I don't know what they are trying to prove by this. I think that the Black, Hispanic, and Asian teams should get together and make the White group the social minority on this island. But ( Read more... )

That video is from pre-integration of the schools, isn't it? I remember one of my teachers discussing it in middle school. (Delta English, 7th grade...I think) It's one of those disturbing truths that sticks with you.

Of course, then there's always the problem with "positive" stereotyping and viewing minorities as "exotic beauty". I imagine that being considered exotic would make one feel like they are a zoo exhibit, instead of just a normal human being. But hey, maybe I'm just talking out my ass....

Anyway, daaaaaaaamn Buchanan is not only an asshole, he's an idiot ( ... )

P.S. "I think that the Black, Hispanic, and Asian teams should get together and make the White group the social minority on this island. But you know, I think that should happen in real live too."

Um...when you lead the revolution can you remember to please just put people like Mr. Buchanan against the wall and not your so-pale-she-glows-in-the-dark friend? Thanks. :P

It won't let me. Something's wrong w/ the computer right now. I'm going to try again later.

I assumed it was the same as I heard about (yes, I know what assuming does) b/c of the clothes that little girl is wearing. Part of me wants to watch it b/c I'm curious about the scientific method....and part of me is already horrified and really, really doesn't want to watch it.

Oh, and I also wanted to say that I think Buchanan is a coward. That's why he's doing all of this. There's only so much power and influence and resources to go around. He's on the top now. But, he sees the end of his power approaching and it terrifies him to think what it'd be like on the bottom.

This man isn't v. smart in his fear. Either that or it's just a publicity stunt. Extremism, shouting, and ass-holishness gets you air time. If he was smart he'd support policies and positions that engendered good-will and understanding among all ethnic groups and races. It would put him in a much safer position when there's a power or paradigm shift.

Sorry, I'm rambling

Pat Buchanan says only white people can keep the country from collapsing. I can disprove the whole theory in two words: George Bush.

I know you know this, but we're not all awful. A lot of us are, but not all of us.

The part about the dolls was facinating, but I have to say that I'm not sure how to react to that one section where the girl was talking about heritage and not knowing where she comes from while everyone else does. I think that sort of mindset is problematic, just because most white people don't celebrate their ethnic heritage, minus perhaps the Italians and Irish, who have probably held onto that ethnic pride because they were once as abused as black people are in this country. However, my mother had never prepared a traditional hungarian dish nor has my paternal grandmother ever shared the secrets about the family's settling in the new world. So what I want to know is what this girl imagines she is missing out on by not knowing specifically where she is from, when most 3rd and 4th generation immigrants are in the same boat (hells yeah for the pun)

Yeah, it was the part about the dolls that really got me. And you bring up a good point. I have been thinking a lot about ethnic history and why it is so important. I don't think knowing specifically where you are from would help with your identity for most white people. I honestly didn't think it was an issue for African Americans either, just people in between (from my experience anyway, and you know that I need to bring it back to me). Maybe its just one more thing to be upset about, just in general.

you know, as a quasi-scientist I have a natural skepticism about experiments and about the experimental practice. I'd like to see that experiment redone with both white and black testgivers and see how the reactions of the kids go. It looked like the administrator in Brown v. Board was white, and it might be that kids even that young pick up on the sentiment of white-black relationships and try to tell what they think the administrator wants to hear. Oviously if that were the case that would be a problem too ( ... )
