drabble: New Beginnings

A little drabbly-thing, written for carpenyx at legendland.
New Beginnings
Cara had nearly died of fright when he had appeared out of nowhere, moving around her only horse in silence and sneaking up on her like that while she was drawing the day's water. With a traveling man looking for work, one never could tell their intentions, and the woman within her had shouted for her to send him away. Still...something about him had driven her to take the chance on him, and now she was glad that she had listened to that inner being. Perhaps it was the Creator giving her guidance.
"These are for you..," he'd said as he held out a handful of freshly-picked flowers, a shy grin on his face. "They match your dress."
Lines such as that were never spoken by a traveler...but, sure enough, the flowers had matched, right down to the stitching. He was something else entirely, this one. It wasn't every day that a man such as he would come around, work himself to exhaustion for but a single day's worth of meals, and befriend her children. Perhaps...perhaps she should keep him around, attempt to convince him to stay. He seemed to be a good man, and Cara had long ago given up hope of finding another with the qualities her husband had had. This could be the new beginning she had been praying for all this time.
Cara smiled up at him and nodded. This would be her new beginning; she would make it so.
