Bugs.

Reading a post on damnportlanders, I followed a link to the Wikipedia entry on the house centipede. Don't look if you're squeamish about bugs! Reedies, this is what you probably know as an ODB bug.

Upon finishing that, I headed on over to the article on earwigs, because I've always wanted to know what's up with them: are they dangerous, for example, or is it ( Read more... )

There was a period of time in which i entertained the idea that they were an invention of my imagination. Later, my roommate and i shared a reality in which these critters frequented our bunkbed. Not the pleasantest part of that particular reality.

"In Japan, these creatures are referred to as gejigeji and enjoy a level of popularity. They can often be seen for sale in pet stores." messed up.

"The largest recorded specimen is 6 1/2 inches." aaugh!

"aaugh" is pretty much how I feel about those bugs in general. I will probably spend part of the weekend cleaning out my kitchen and bathroom now, thanks.

Eugh.

They are known as 'nightmare bugs' to some of us from the Colorado area.

I was chopping up a 'fresh out of a garden' cabbage a few weeks ago and about 6 of those little bastards came crawling out. It was horrifying!

I hate that they're called "house centipedes"! I googled them obsessively one night when I lived in ODB to figure out what they were and was livid when I found out.

The problem with calling them "house centipedes" you see, is that-like "house fly" or "house spider"-it makes them sound... well... like they belong with the house!

They don't.

Because of an E. Nesbit (I think) book, I kind of think of earwigs as a precursor to dragons.

Scot and I have joking started called them "Swedish Feesh" (because it is impossible for us to say "Swedish Fish" like normal people) due to our disappointment with their real name, the way in which they never cease to be somewhat shocking, and the fact that we were in the midst of a conversation about the candy when we first saw one.

Some exciting things: if you have a cat who kills them, you will always know one has been killed by the trail of legs that they shoot off of their bodies in an attempt to distract from the attack.

They never go away because they originate from the base of the building.

If you leave a carcass of one on the wall, it seems to dissuade the others from coming out for a little while.
