Movie Rants! BEWARE FOR SPOILERS

Jul 18, 2010 20:57

So, the boy and I had two date Sundays in a row.  Shocking, I know.  Both times, we went to the movies.  One was very, very good.  One was very, VERY bad.

We'll start with the bad.  Mainly because we went to this one last week, and I need to get this off my chest.

The boy and I are both HUGE Avatar: The Last Airbender (TLA) fans.  So we were so pumped for this movie.  I bought us shirts and everything.  I did my NAILS in airbender colors.  I WAS SO PUMPED.

We went and saw the movie.  All I can say to you, Mister M. Night, is THAT I AM FUCKING DISAPPOINT.

EVERYTHING WAS WRONG.

For one, they could not pronounce a thing right.  Such as Aang.  Short a, kinda like aide.  Aang.  They kept saying Aang, with the long a, like in par.  WRONG.  They cut out OMASHU and the Kyoshi Warriors.  SUKI.

They cut out the pirates, Katara being awesome, and Haku was not a misogynic bastard.  This made me very sad.

On top of that, the graphics were kinda blah.  Appa was pretty cool, but aside from that... not too great.

Now for the big guns:  THEY MESSED UP THE FIGHTING STYLES.  Firebending is based on a type of fighting called Shaolin.  They did not use this for the firebenders.  No, they used it for AANG.  UGH.  And the earthbending?  Horrible.  At least they did the Tai Chi right for the waterbenders.

Two, the Avatar state was not cool.  No Roku, and he could control it.  That's not right.

And then the cast.  Unless you've lived under a rock, you had to have heard about the cast.  It's pretty white-washed.  The main good guys (Aang, Katara, Sokka, etc) are all white.  All of them.  The firebenders are all Middle Eastern or Indian.  At least the earthbenders were Chinese, or I would have really cried.

On top of it, very few of them could act.  The actress for Katara looked and sounded the part, but had no emotion, no spark.  Don't get me started on Sokka, that guy was Jasper from Twilight.  Sigh.  And Aang... his voice, his lack of reflection, he was not the Avatar to me.  He didn't FEEL.

The only good actors were the firebenders.  I LOVED Patel as Zuko.  Loved.  He was everything I wanted: conflicted, proud, arrogant, fierce.  But surprisingly loyal and nice.  The guy who played Iroh was pretty good too, he pulled off the concerned uncle part very well.

We got a glimpse at the girl who would play Azula, and I pray that she will be the most insane, psychopathic girl ever, or I give up on this.

It was that bad.

Tonight, we went and saw Inception instead.  IT WAS GOOD.  EVERYONE SHOULD GO SEE IT NOW.

There was nothing about that movie I didn't like.  The cast was excellent, the graphics and scene choices were beautiful, and the metaphors... it was amazing.  Marion Cottliard was just... perfect.  Ellen Page was hilarious and kick-ass, and Cillian Murphy is in it.  You really have to pay attention, there's so much detail.  Christopher Nolan spent ten years on this script, and trained himself on directing by doing the Batman series.  It really shows.

allow me to be melodramatic now, !public, movies are awesome, allow me to tell you
