Say you're a language nerd without saying it

Mar 19, 2021 04:25

When bilingual friends have kids, I wonder if they are going to teach the kid their native language.

Random language facts interest me even if I have never studied those languages.

I know what agglutinative and ergative mean.

I know diphthongs are not underwear.

I enjoy  translation

My mom calls me a linguist

In my family, we had a situation for a while when I spoke to my kids in Russian (and they answered in Russian) but they spoke to each other in English. *We are in Canada.)
I am not sure whether they are going to teach their children Russian, but I will certainly do whatever I can to teach the language to my grandkids!

Raising a kid bilingual is harder than it looks. It requires outside support if you want them to be fully proficient in the language. That support may or may not exist depending on the prevalence of your language where you are. You also have to decide how you want to approach it However, even knowing a little of another language is good. Example Brazilian singer Astrud Gilberto was chosen for a bilingual version of Girl from Ipanema because she knew some English.
