If not you, then who?

I think Only You Can Save Mankind may possibly be one of the best books ever written.

Only You Can Save Mankind is an older story of Terry Pratchett's, published originally around '92 or something near that. It's the first book in the Johnny Maxwell trilogy, which is completely unrelated to his other books. And is also quite awesome, I've discovered. The first book (Only You Can Save Mankind) has just been published (for the first time, if I'm not mistaken) in the USA, and I decided, "Hey, let's buy it!"

I was not disappointed.

The story is about a boy named Johnny Maxwell who likes to play a video game called "Only You Can Save Mankind." In the game, he fights the ScreeWee Empire, who have, according to the game, destroyed the entire Earth fleet but for one ship: you! Only You Can Save Mankind, after all. But then... well, what happens when the ScreeWee surrender to you? That's the basis of this book. Johnny begins to be transported into what he calls "Game Space" during his sleep, and has to help the ScreeWee against kids like him playing video games, while leading them to a mysterious "border" which humans can't cross.

And it's not just that that's awesome. It's the characters. All of Johnny's completely crazy friends, Kirsty-call-me-Sigourney, the Captain, and even Johnny himself. They're all really real-feeling, and you just can't help but like them. Well, maybe not the Gunnery Officer, but he's a great character, too, despite being--well, completely off his rocker.

In short: BUY. NOW.
