Resolution of the film = And they lived happily ever after.

i figure we'd hear no more from the duke, Zidler would continue running the Moulin rouge and adopt a different girl to be the new sparkling diamond until he could actually find a good investor, and Christian and Satine would move to a nicer city where Satine could (given shes completely cured) be an actress and Christian would be a writer. VOILA.

Audiences wouldn’t like the film as much then because all the drama is gone; there is no tragic amazing ending. Would you still like Romeo&Juliet if they ended up being together and their families approved? -of course not. Sure the characters would be happier, but movies are made to please the viewer.

Thanks for the quick and thorough reply. Sorry to throw a little pessimism your way... but here are some follow up questions.

Why wouldn't you hear anymore from the duke? Would the duke give up so easily? Would he, a man of power and wealth be humiliated and not seek vengeance?

Zidler is an independent guy, and I could see his outcome turning out well irregardless of what happens.

Would people respect an ex-courtesan as an actress? Would she respect herself? Could she remain faithful to one man although she has been accustomed to being with many? Would Christian have regrets of being with her, knowing her past?

Do audiences prefer the sad tragic ending? I think the typical hollywood ending is for the lovers to end up happily ever after. Many love stories end up with one of the two lovers dying tragically.
