Whereas "full-Jews" were not allowed in the Wermacht, half-Jews had to serve but could not become officers or NCOs. To avoid being sent to concentration camps, many half-Jews served with falsified documents claiming full German descent. Although many served with sincere hopes of sparing their families' lives, mischling soldiers often returned home to find that their families had been deported in spite of their service.
Hitler's obsession with race became increasingly complicated as the war continued. He made numerous exemptions for mischling soldiers caught serving under false documentation who were good soldiers. While Hitler conducted a horrific mass extermination of seemingly all Jews, he also personally granted clemency to thousands of half-Jewish soldiers, permitting some to have the label "Aryan" marked on their identification papers. His random "method" of sparing some and condemning others demonstrates his paradoxical view of Jewish identity
