Of Beats and Poses

Mmmm, more animation practice goodness to share.  This time we had to do a ‘Swoon’, a character swaying to one side then losing consciousness as they fall and pass out.  The excercise was definitely very challenging…keeping up with all those joints and the idea of it the movement was conscious or just a result of gravity after the figure passed out ( Read more... )

Aha! Well, with no acting background, second one definitely better. I agree with the unwarranted comment that the first one looks kinda like it's freezing.
Wonder if the difference is whether you're trying to make something comic-al or as realistic as possible.

I like the first one better. I can just picture the music in the background. It's not like it was completely still. You have the person do the foot wiggle. That was funny. The smirk at the "freeze frame" just made me want to laugh when he collapsed right afterwards.

Well, my opinion is that, with only the line figure, that I prefer the first one. I think this is because the pauses make it more dramatic, and without anything else in the visual field (background, other characters etc) the breaks provide more emphasis for the actions taken by the figure. That being said, if this were a fully developed animation with a background, other characters or what have you, the second version may work better. It's a difference between being the entire scene (and so trying to wring more out of the single figure), and having more context to play off of. Those are my thoughts anyway.
