Maybe it's just that you're out of practice. Getting to know someone and becoming friends takes a lot of effort on both sides, and it's easier if you are used to doing it.

This is why we have therapists! To help us understand ourselves, because I live with me every day and tend to lose perspective. Ask Dr. Jaffee!

I don't have the exact same problem, but it takes me ages to feel comfortable with people. I was in classes with the same 20 people for 2 years (4 semesters), and there are still only one or two that I consider actual friends, only 4-5 that I want to keep in touch with. I don't dislike them, I just don't feel friendish. I only have one friend in Australia (other than Mark), that being April (who is one of those unnaturally friendly sorts that are nice because they always call first :P). I like my classmates and I think I could be friends with them in time, but I don't have enough time, so it probably won't happen ( ... )

Aha! So that's why you dove right back into that Star Trek book when I met you in junior high.

Well, you know you do it. That's a start.

The best way to do something you know you want to do but can't do... is to do it. Terrible advice. Maybe make yourself a little schedule that you tell yourself you have to keep. "Oh, it's Tuesday at 5. I need to play the game with Josie." Don't let yourself not interact.
