"Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses" by U2
A Review by Lindsey
First of all, let me start by saying that this song is in my Top Ten Songs of All Time list.
This is beautifully written both lyrically and musically.
The song begins with a noise most people don't usually hear...
It's almost like a living breathing song as I hear it. Such a beat and such consistent things happening. It feels like a rocking boat, or you know that if you could, you would stand and sway and sway for hours just listening to this song. It's a moving song.
The lyrics begin "You're dangerous, 'cos you're honest/ You're dangerous, you don't know what you want./ Well you left my heart empty as a vacant lot/ For any spirit to haunt," and thus begins a great battle raging between fans for every U2 song on the face of the planet.
What does it mean? Twenty different people will give you twenty different answers. Me? Well someone's dangerous. Someone's honest. Someone doesn't know what they want. But I bet getting put in a U2 song is right up there on the list of stuff they want so...But this Someone seems to me to be someone who Bono or the narrator is in love with. Maybe. Or maybe it's God.
But going with the former, I think this person broke Narrator's heart. They're honest, breaking hearts. They don't know what they want, leaving the narrator. They left Narrator's heart empty as a vacant lot for any spirit to haunt. Which means they just left and Narrator tried to fill the space they left with anyone he/she could find. That is called rebound.
And the music is still making us sway. Making us feel like we're right there in with the song. Another good example of this is "Electrical Storm" but that's for a different review.
After a bit, we get to the chorus. Moving and emotional, U2 in a peak. "Who's gonna ride your wild horses?/ Who's gonna drown in your blue sea?/ Who's gonna ride your wild horses?/ Who's gonna fall at the foot of thee?"
Narrator misses doting over Somebody. Or Narrator sinned and wants God's forgiveness. Dang it, U2, can't you make anything simple?
The drums in this are really, really great. The guitar and bass work sneakily undetected until you choose to seek them out. I really keep finding things every day about this song and it only amazes me more and more.
"Well you stole it 'cos I needed the cash/ And you killed it 'cos I needed revenge./ Well you lied to me 'cos I asked you to./ Baby, can we still be friends?"
Okay, this completely dispels my notion that it could be about God, I dunno about you. It gets complicated right here. Poor, poor narrator. But the lyrics really aren't interesting to me anymore.
The music is.
Then with the hey heys and sha la las. For such brilliant lyric writing, U2 is reverting to old days of vowel noises. But okay, it works in with the song.
Basically, in the end, Narrator begs the Someone to not turn around, don't look back, don't look back. It's touching, moving, enough to make me cry.
This song was on 1991's album "Achtung Baby," which is my favorite album of all time as well.
I really love this song and I give it four and a half stars out of five because actually, I rate other songs higher. Those for later.
I thank Shelbie for suggesting this song and being my Official Review Girl, which means she has proofread this entire thing so you aren't reading my original stupid rambles. Thank you Shelbie. :)
