We're pretty far in Johto, Pokemon in this area usually begin from level 15. Yours is at level 5 for now, you can train it, so it gains more levels.

I'm sure we all have people and work in the real world but unfortunately we can't get back there right now.

The Pokemon is your Starter and it's called Growlithe. He is all yours. You can give him a name if you want, I'm sure he'd like that. Growlithe are fire type pokemon - fire type is just one of the many types here.

He is currently at level 5, that's where all Starters are at the beginning. Pokemon gain more levels by battling with other Pokemon close to the same level with them. It's up to you to train him in battles ...Which...Doesn't really work in this area since all the wild Pokemon here seem to be somewhere between levels 15 and 25. But he'll be useful outside this town, we're just pretty far in Johto right now.
