Part One
...this boy is cracking up....this boy has broken down....

Hermione stared out the window of Gryffindor tower, her hands splayed out on the cool marble of the sill.

From this high perspective, she had a clear view of Harry and Neville sitting on the grassy hill that swelled up behind the Quidditch pitch. Each boy was leaning against the other's back, and they were passing a bottle of butterbeer back and forth between them. From this distance, she couldn't tell if they were talking, or just resting in the wan spring sunshine. They had cast aside their robes and ties, and Hermione could see they had rolled up the sleeves of their white shirts and undone the collars.

"I'm worried about him," she admitted softly to Ron. "There's so much coming up, and he's not at all prepared for the NEWTs, and now he's got to deal with a break-up on top of it all. He just looks so exhausted."

Ron stepped up behind her and looked over her shoulder, wrapping his arms around her as he stared down at his two dorm mates.

"Which one of them are you talking about?" he asked. "Sorta applies to both of them, now, doesn't it?"

Out in this open space they had a clear view all around ~ in fact, with the two of them sitting back to back like this they pretty much had a 360 degree view.

He leaned back to take a drink of the butterbeer. He had to move his head slightly to one side while Neville moved his to the other, in a comfortable rhythm they were beginning to perfect as the level of beer in the bottle got lower and lower and required more of an angle to find. His hair mingled into Neville's, wavy and soft and a hundred and fifty shades of brown.

He handed the bottle back to Neville, who took his arm off his bent knee and reached over to take it. Harry watched the long fingers collect the neck of the bottle.

Harry closed his eyes and listened to some tiny choir of insects singing in the grass. It was putting him to sleep. It had been so long since he'd had any decent rest. It was nice to just sit here, and not talk about Ginny, and listen to Neville not talk about Hannah.

He lolled his head obligingly to the side as Neville's hair brushed into his.
