Do the birds push out the pieces of food they don't like? Because they do that at my parents and it's hilarious to watch. There's always a big pile of unwanted food (it's a mixed food type and apparently there's good and bad pieces?) on the ground. But rabbits come along and eat it so it all works out.
(Wait, the sunflower thing might not be true if you're midwestern or western. My knowledge is specialized a bit. Anyway, black oil sunflower has a comparatively thin shell and most birds here can crack it open regardless of specialty.)
