Accents

You ever talk to someone with such a strong (not necessarily thick, but strong) accent that you have to watch yourself so you don't imitate them? Well, I had a lady in the store yesterday right before I left that had a nice present Irish accent. I had that, but I did the imitating. Nearly the entire time I was in Virginia I would switch back and forth between my Northern Midwest and the Southern style. Best part is, I'm actually pretty good at it for someone that's never lived further down than Ohio.

I pick up on accents and start using them too. Which is amazing considering my hearing.

I know exactly where you're coming from. I do it sometimes here in Edmonton without even thinking about it. New Foundlanders and Cape Bretoners all over the place, its hard not to. Quite a few Brits, Irish and a few Aussies out here, and just knowing they're around makes me smile, with the Irish being "close enough" to an accetp I used enough to hearing to immitate unintentionally. Given where you're living, I think you could probably get away with a bit of lilting every now and again and nobody would think twice about it.

Oh ghads! Horrible, just horrible man! :D

I have heard from many people visiting from other countries that it's one of those endearing things that Canadians do. Just adapting to the people around them...
