How can Potterverse appeal to me AND you AND them?

Feb 08, 2007 00:51

I painted my first Snape last night and thought it would be a fitting topic for my neglected LiveJournal. Only, I am so full of something else, I must twist my arm to even mention it. I made a userpic of it, I hope it shows, and the big picture can be seen HERE . No, it is a worthy topic after all. I found a great little painting program, ArtRage Read more... )

Wow - sounds pretty brutal. I've never heard of this Hogwarts Elite before - probably best to simply avoid them.

They are huge. Of course, they can still be avoided.

I saw the same note as you did on regann's LJ, so I also took a quick look, though not in depth as you did. The whole concept seemed loony to me, and now considering what you've just said, I can add "cruel" and "ugly" to the list. What I don't get is what the community exists *for* beyond this "sorting" process. What do you do there if you are judged among the "elite"?

Regann would know more details, but as I understand, they do art and fics and play games, collect points and try to recreate Hogwarts in many details. They have a community for Ministry, which deals with complaints, they have officials in each of daughter communities. They appoint teachers, have Yula balls. I'll go to find out if any of their creations are accessible to non-members. I've read that not everybody can post stories and art. In order to have a "shop in Diagon Alley", you must win in a competition of some sort.

Check out fandom_wank. They've been on it several times.

You know how Droxy's HGSS drabble comm has "Death Eaters" and "Order members" who drabble for points? It's kinda like that.

There are alot of fannish activities -- everything from icon contests to drabble contests, discussion, trivia, etc. You don't have to do any of them once you're accepted -- all you have to do is sort X number of applications per week. You earn points for each contest you win which goes toward your House, etc.

Some of the time it can be alot of fun and I've met some cool people. But sometimes -- like the sorting -- people are really cruel and superior and just plain mean. And several of the more prominent members just plain act like they have the right to be mean to everyone.

I originally joined because my friend handful joined and liked it alot.

And the "position" I have is new and only for this month and I only got it because no one else applied. Usually I don't do anything but sort my apps and then ignore the rest of it.

Life's too short to get involved with that kind of exclusivity. That little girl needs to find some more supportive environments. It's a pity that so many of us have to exclude underage people from our journals. I think I'll go over and say hello to her.

BTW, may I friend you?

Sure you can friend me if you wish, but you won't find much of interest. I keep the LJ only in order to follow SSHG fanfiction, but I hardly read anything except (SSHG) Digest, Awards, Quiz, Exchange. When I do write something I tend to lock it for Friends, so there may be a reason to do it, but really rarely.
I had a look at your profile. I love the text you wrote. Could I perhaps interest you in reading a few chapters of a SSHG story I've written some (many) months ago and got stuck? Apart from needing a native English beta, I need a true feedback.

BTW, did you want your comment screened? I don't really know what it means or if it's automatic. Maybe I shouldn't have unscreened it?

I was a bit surprised that it was screened. Don't know what it means/how to do it/how to turn it off.

Of course I will read your writing (be honoured to) - I just can't promise speed. Do my best, but I have children...

Hi, this is Nora on a different journal. I recieved dickgloucester's message some time ago and replied in kind, but only stumbled upon your journal today after seeing his message again.

I'm 16 now and I've been in the community for over a year now, and despite its thorny exterior and sporadic bouts of wank, I have thoroughly enjoyed it. Looking back I can now see how some of the members got what they did from my application even if some were rather abrasive in their comments, but I feel that in most communities of the size it is somewhat inevitable and despite their remarks I have found many friends.

Additionally, I just want you to know that I truly do appreciate what you wrote about me. The compliments mean even more when not given directly, so I thank you for them. :)

You are right about the "elite" thing but isn't that how most societies that use it are? I think it's flawed within itself, as it depends on whom is judging ( ... )

"Elite" is only elite in other people's opinion. The fact of naming oneself so obliterates the essence. Person, community, organization -- real elite does not flaunt the fact.

Routine is difficult only because you don't want to keep doing it. It is a helpful thing to keep doing because it becomes easier with every repetition. Don't fall into routine in important matters of the mind and experience, but bathroom and dressing -- Please.

About hair -- I was talking about the principle. Experimenting is not the same as trying to correct in order to feel good about your looks because the feeling comes from inside (or not) regardless of perm or dye.

I have a good friend on Long Island, one that would appreciate knowing a sharp youngster. He has a wife and little daughter (and a son your age with his ex wife in Florida).

I think I'll have a look at your boring blog. Don't hold it against me if I give up soon. It is not so much what you write as how you write that interests me.

Bye.
