The crackdown seems to be aimed at enforcing harsher sentances on kerb crawlers and punters. The government have very forcefully said that they will not consider legalising/decriminalising prostitution nor will they consider setting up licensed brothels. I fear this sort of measure, should it be effecetive, will only serve to force the problem further underground.
The government are concerned with clearing the problem off the streets, rather than dealing with the health and welfare of those working on the streets. From a harm minimisation point of view, this sort of thing sucks ass (and it'll charge you a tenner for that!). I actually heard one MP talking about curing the problem. I doubt very much that New Labour are capable of dealing with an issue that's been around for thousands of years. The sheer arrogance of them!
