The big problems are that I am out of the apartment for at least 10 hours a day on weekdays, and (assuming Eric and I get back together) there are some weekends when I go out of town. The dog would not get a lot of attention this summer, although it would get a lot more during the school year. As far as long-term ownership, I have no idea where I will be living in a few years and what my work hours will be like.I'd say a definitive no based on this paragraph. Your roommate will end up having to hear it barking for hours when you're not around, it will be restless from the lack of attention and probably destroy everything it touches simply due to energy, and you will have no time to properly train him. If you can't commit your energy to a dog, particularly one as volatile and as a young mix of two incredibly high-spirit dogs, you shouldn't have one. It will not be able to hold it's bladder for 10 hours at a time, and you'd have to have a dog sitter pretty much every other weekend if you stay in your relationship... it's just not a good

Well, he's 8 months old, which means that he's been socialized to a great degree, and the shelter describes him as friendly and docile, with both people and other dogs. As far as the bladder, the literature I've been reading says that, at his age, he has developed sufficient bladder control for 8-10 spans, but I really couldn't keep him waiting longer than that.
However, I would still have to crate him while I am at work, at least in the beginning until I get a sense for his destructive tendencies, and this is of course less than ideal. I'd also have to commit to running with him for at least an hour daily, because these breeds do need to be exercised.
