You took honours maths AND maths? Like...double maths? I'm a little impressed..

...I did actually read the whole thing, but don't have an awful lot to say, but felt I had to comment given the last line of this entry..

My only argument might be...you seem to have put an awful lot of thought into justifying your studies, which seems a little...pointless? Gotta do what you love and all that, shouldn't have to tell yourself it's useful to help you sleep at night (whether it's useful or not), and apart from that...who gives a fuck what anyone else thinks? :)

...this is from someone who it looks likely to be doing a science degree in a few months when he really couldn't care any less about science right now. Awesomely hypocritical.

I'm just that amazing. Or distracted and writing 'maths' instead of 'physics'. I do feel the need to justify my own studies, firstly because people tell me that I only need to bullshit to get my degree, which is, eh, bullshit and I'm hardly going to give up an opportunity for debate, and secondly, because I've been raised to believe that contributing to the world and its wellbeing and that of its inhabitants is extremely important and I want to make sure I'm doing just that.

If you wanted to reduce it right down, science is just about as useful as any "artistic" endeavour anyway. What does science do? Technological advances? To what end? Improving the human living condition, it certainly seems to me (to be a bit cynical about it, of course not everything is about humans, but a shamefully large amount of stuff is). What do "artist endeavours" (in which I'm including English, not just saying English because I think Art falls into a similar bracket.. I sure like parantheses) contribute? Culture, which is undoubtedly necessary for a fulfilled life ( ... )
