I also liked the parts where the characters combated their urges to form facial expressions. It was like they felt something but didn't show it, but then we as the audience/readers learned it anyway!
Also, the way you communicated that the wolf has some human-like expressions was masterful. Great backstory! I thought it was really well-handled.
I did feel like the pace was a little fast for a first chapter and maybe some readers would get lost in the action. But not me!

Yeah, there's a lot more backstory that never made it into the story. This is essentially set during the sequel to my first NaNovel. It was a book that's since spawned an entire world that has four distinct culture groups on at least one continent. I have at least an idea and/or title for five other stories (including the sequel).
I tried to make it where you wouldn't need to know any of that in order to understand and enjoy this story. Hope I succeeded.
