Monteiths make really quite good beer. And yet the best description I can come up with for their cider is inoffensive. It's not bad it's just bland. It's like the supermarket white bread of ciders

I'm a huge fan of cider (almost never drink beer)...so I know your frustration with the lack of good cider in Australia. Strongbow and Mercury are available most places but are dire. Pipsqueak is inoffensive but kinda lacking, and the aftertaste leaves something to be desired. Bulmers Irish Cider is apparently alright -- if you get the real thing. Here, it's owned and made by Foster's. *gurgle* Having said that, it's a big step above Strongbow (hardly saying much). On a more positive note, there's a handful of places around Melbourne that have cider on tap and it's a completely different breed. :->
Mercury is a long step ahead of Strongbow, which is pear flavoured lolly water. I drank Mercury Dry for any number of years cos it was crisp enough to be a refreshing summer drink.
I'm quite a fan of Coldstream Cider if you can get it - aside from a trip to the brewery :) Dry, crips, potent.
Pipsqueak is my other go to.
Mercury Atisan is awful. 3 Oaks is too sweet Newtons is dry but lacking in flavour.
Trying to think if I've left off any that I've come across. As we can see, I will try at least once, every brand I find :)
There are a couple of English and Irish ones at Dan Murphy's which I should investigate again.
THe crepe place in Fitzroy which I always forget the name of...Breizon, that's it! Sell French Cider which is pretty good - and they will sell take away bottles too. For drinking in - and finding somewhere else if I can - the Harcour Perry is tasty, though the Harcourt ciders themselves are lacking.
