Given that I can come a cropper when just walking..., well, walking and reading seems to be a stretch. But my usual route has the known hazards imprinted on my subconscious monitor, apparently.
The non-standard route? Oh, not so much. But, when walking (and reading) that route, I was re-reading an old, comfort read. So, I wasn't totally engulfed in the written word.
My conspicuous showing that I walked to work, or at least some part of it, had nothing to do with reading. I caught the tip of my Teva sandal on the edge of a pavement block in a situation when I couldn't do any of the falling-mitigation techniques (like tuck-n-roll). The health unit where I worked used _every_ shape bandage on me... square, round, amoeba-shaped, paramecia-shaped.... And the bruise my lip balm gave me on my thigh? Spectacular!

Thanks for the update!
It sounds as though the thrift-ification was productive and not too devastating. And a visit to the library book sale is _always_ warranted.
The follow-on to Thirty-nine Steps is Greenmantle of which there are two copies in the bookshelf to the left of the doorway into the back part of the house. I'm sure the reigning feline will be pleased to accompany you whilst you peruse it.
I'll be curious to hear about the glass laser as it becomes built.

(Friends had a New Year's Day party and I'm the self-designated scullery maid for such events, so I just got home.)
