Wow, that's really weird.

I would try to describe to her the negative feelings that would most likely occur if the owner never got the kitten back.

Actually, hide the cat ("Oh no, it must have ran out the back door!") until Bethany leaves the apartment. Then after she is gone, Caleb can return it. The end.
