I finished pretty much everything I spelled out in this earlier post, but there’s more to do for Fifth Gate!
  • Finish overdress (I’m on like step 7 out of 42)
  • Finish cloak/invocation circle (see: featured image for this post)
    • Fix the gnarly hand-sewing bits
    • Attach hood
    • Cut lining ( Read more... )

You're 100% right about incants. Here's a couple of things that really helped me:

1. You're going to flub them. It's going to happen. And no one's going to care. Not the NPCs or the PCs. You'll flub them and stumble over them and it'll still all be cool. And I know that sounds obvious, but it took me games and games to internalize it.

2. Just because an incant sounds awesome on paper doesn't mean that it'll flow in game. For me, I had a ton of incants that just never took and I would try new ones until I found ones that stuck. I need a certain kind of rhythm or I'll never get it out. I went through like... three or four incants before I settled on Layla's heal. And then tried to change it and couldn't. Don't be afraid to try new things if something doesn't feel right in your mouth or isn't working on the field.

See you on the field! :)

Thanks! That is reassuring :) At the end of the fight practice, I took to just saying "incant incant incant incant" when I couldn't remember something ;)

I do like that the 5G folks have suggested incants (at least they do for Silverfire, and I'm assuming it's the same for Wrathborn), because it saves me having to think of them. On the other hand, I've already petitioned to change one because it's too similar to have two that both start "I invoke..." And I know JJ told me she asked to change the "circle of life" one because Elton John songs and the Lion King are not the headspace she wanted to inhabit for that character...

I take it you'll be NPCing, then? See you there!

-This post makes me feel simultaneously better and worse about the work I've done on costuming/props so far. One the one hand, I've procrastinated way worse than anyone else, and I have my own costume, two other PC costumes, and two NPC shield covers to finish. On the other... I'm doing really loose, simple patterns... it looks like you still have way more than me to do... so... I can do this ( ... )

The Jade Bedroll! It has the power to restore Vitality! (Not really, tho now I kind of wish).

You can do it! The fitting has been the hardest part of my costuming, and that is thankfully mostly done. If you don't have fitting to worry about, things should go a lot faster.

Also, I suspect you have a lot more free time than me. I'm having to do this during a very busy and stressful time at work. (Although, not this afternoon, clearly ;) ).

Regarding the fight practice: you did fine, and there's no reason to expect you should have to do it all yourself. It seems to me like the newbies had a good time -- Alon told me he did, at least.

Yeah, but for some reason I'm feeling compelled to spend my free time in an increasingly hostile discussion about the idea of a LARP debate on Facebook (of all the near worthless media)...

Well, I expect myself to do it all myself because I proposed the idea both to the 5G google group and to Festival. But I think the important thing is -- it happened, people like it, so it can happen again! And the experience showed me ways I can improve it.

Technically, I'd fought with boffers a few times before - two weekends (once as a PC, once as an NPC), a few one-shots at cons and such.

But yeah, not terribly experienced.

Also, re forgetting incants, I forgot incants as a Cottington NPC, and standards for NPCs are stricter than for PCs.
