I think it's worth trying out the first book in the sequel series to Kushiel's Dart, whose major characters are basically the children et al of the characters of the first series. It's a perfect example of what a long running fantasy series SHOULD be - the problems solved by the original characters have now blossomed into new problems to be dealt with by their children. Old hierarchies upended have led to new hierarchies.
It's a very different take on "epic fantasy" compared to the endless bricks with the same characters who STILL haven't killed the dark lord or whatever.
