Once upon a time, or a few weeks ago, the darling buckle_berry came up with a Plan, and the Plan was a Valentine's Day Fandom Cardathon. You signed up, and gave three pairings you'd like to receive a card from, and then there was a poll where you said which you could write, and then Berry e-mailed out your recipient and what choices you had to write. I'm not going to tell you what that was, but I am going to tell you about the truly truly wonderful Valentine's I received the other day. One of the pairings I requested was Henry/Clare from The Time Traveler's Wife, but as I also gave a Harry Potter pairing, I wasn't really expecting to get something Henry/Clare-ish.

And then in the post the other day I got the most marvellous surprise! Which because I love you all, I am going to share with you through some decidedly amateur photography.

That was the piece of paper I saw when I opened the first (!) envelope.

Then I saw

and emitted a sound previously unknown in this house. I suspect only dogs could really hear it.

Then I came across

which, then had this on the back

When opened this led me to this

This being a wonderful long letter from Henry to Clare. The entire contents of the envelope make the most of the inefficiencies of postal systems, and people being unreliable when asked to post things, and then culminates in a lovely lovely letter, written on Valentine's Day by Henry on a beach. My heart melted, and I got all giddy and misty-eyed when I'd finished investigating the contents of the letter. I have no earthly clue as to who sent me it, but I am very very thankful! Thank you anonymous cardathon-er!

ETA: There has been Cardathon revelation! My anonymous card sender was the now-not-so-anonymous mathmusician! Three cheers!
mathmusician has very very kindly sent me the text of Henry's letter, so you can all read it as well.

My Dearest Clare,

Last week we discussed how wonderful it would be to visit Australia,
to lie on the beach together and enjoy the sun. As I write this, I'm
sitting on a sand dune that slopes down to a beautiful beach, and
wishing you were here.

I'm not sure when I am but I'm pretty sure I'm in Australia and
Clare, I so wish you were here. I'm not sure why I'm writing this
letter, I won't be able to buy an envelope or stamp to post it after
all, but it seems like something I needed to do and there was a pen
and a notebook right here by somebody's towel. I'm just going to leave
it on the sand here and ... you never know. Like a message in a
bottle, but without the bottle part; I know you'd like that.

I may not be sure when I am now, but when I came from it's the
14th of February and we should be having dinner together tonight.

Clare, will you be my Valentine?

Will you be my valentine forever and always, even when - again - I've
left you alone? I should be with you, in our little home where we can
see the cold and the snow outside our window. I wish I could do this
better, Clare, I want to be with you every second of every day and not
sitting here in the long evening on a heavenly beach in Australia.

I learned something funny today. If one is going to travel through
time and space, then a beach is a very good place to come to. Seeing a
naked man on a beach isn't so strange, and it's easy to pick up a
towel that somebody's left around. Also, at least on this beach at
this time it's not stormy or freezing or raining or any of the other
nasty things that weather can do. I do think I'm rather sunburned
though, which will be interesting to explain to people in the middle
of February.

Clare, I wish you were sitting beside me. I want to tell you I love
you. I want to be with you every moment until the end of time. I wish
we could walk along this beach and watch the sunset with our feet in
the water. The sun is sinking into the waves, so I guess I must be on
the west coast ... it doesn't seem important to know, somehow. Not as
important as writing this.

It will be dark soon, so perhaps I shall end this now. Who knows,
perhaps when Australians find letters without envolopes or stamps they
post them?

I love you always and forever Clare,
Your Henry

Everyone now join me in "awwwwwww".
