I got my Foreign Service Written Exam results today, and I didn't pass. I've requested my score breakdown by section so I can see what to focus on for next year's exam.
When you find out what you need to study, send me and Robbie a quick note. He has a large collection of books and lectures on various topics such as economics, history, etc. We have a shelf of lectures on CD from the Learning Company on things that may be just what you need.
I know if I took the exam, they would fail me for my lack of knowledge of economics. I can't seem to wrap my head around it.
I took the Praxis test to teach secondary school social studies cold 2 yrs ago. I would have passed if it wasn't for my econ scores. The sad fact is I would have passed if I lived in Louisiana.
Sorry you didn't pass, but it's cool that you took it. I read through a study book a few years ago and was impressed at the breadth of knowledge they want you to have. I might take the test too, just for fun.
I would tell you that the study guide had questions that were a lot harder than the actual exam, but I don't feel like I can speak from a position of strength, considering I didn't pass.
But seriously, the study guide questions would ask "Which of the following statements best expresses the basic tenets of US foreign policy under the Reagan administration?" and then would have four true statements that all sounded perfectly plausible. The actual test would have one true statement (the right answer), one easily eliminated way wrong answer, and two answers so vague they couldn't be right. Or so it seemed...;)
Hmph. I used this one because it was the only one I could find when I was looking in November of last year. It has 17 totally blistering reviews on Amazon, and it truly sucked mightily. I see that an updated edition (although Amazon reviews claim all the practice tests are the same, typos and wrongness in the answer key and all) was published in February, and Cliffs Notes has a guide coming out in October.
