Two Moons (Alternate Ending)
“Yours is the light by which my spirit’s born:
- you are my sun, my moon, and all my stars.”
- E. E. Cummings
The thing with connections, between worlds especially, is that none of them are permanent.
Everything relies on the orbits, or the position of the stars in relation to the planets, with potential interruptions from a moon or an asteroid.
Among all the universes, nothing is ever the same.
Yet gravity is constant. Every planet has its own gravity to hold the planet together and keep its inhabitants on the ground; to pull in moons, opening up opportunities to contact other worlds. Even a planet wasting away, on the brink of complete desolation, has enough force to pull in another celestial body, to restore the planet.
---
The new moon was barely the size of a city - barely noticeable, a speck in the sky barely bigger than the distant stars millions of light-years away.
It took them a year and a half to notice the new moon (by which time, two lost opportunities to contact Earth passed.)
The planet’s population was microscopic, compared what it used to be, back before the real Wasting began. Everyone either left, fleeing to other worlds, or died, refusing to leave and perishing in their own homes. All communication with those who left disappeared with the death of their original moon.
The first call came about three years after the moon died (eight Earth years - three, almost four, missed opportunities) from somewhere in the Andromeda Galaxy, and the planet had momentarily come to a standstill and time seemed to stop because suddenly, there was new hope.
It allowed him to hope his call should come soon. If it didn’t, it would be the fourth lost opportunity. If only it would come.

“Oh my g-it actually worked-I didn’t-I miss you.”
“I know. I miss you too.”
“The moon-“
“Yeah. Yeah, it’s back.”
“It-I thought it-it died.”
“It did, it did. How did you know to call?”
“I - I didn’t. I just - habit, you know? I - holy shit - hi.”
“Hi - hi. I missed you; I love you.”
“I love you; I missed you too. I just - come to Earth, please. I know you don’t like it but-”
“Yeah, I know. Okay.”
---
“You’re still coming here? I thought your moon - oh. Oh, who’s this?”
He smiled with genuine happiness, a characteristic she’d never before associated with him. “This is him.”
She grinned widely, holding out her hand with a confidence she’d accumulated as she’d grown up before the demon boy’s eyes. “Hi, I’m Jensen.” Her eyes sparkled as she took in the contentment and excitement in the demon boy’s expression. “Nice to meet you.”
