For Mercedes Lackey- any specific books you would point out as being good Urban/Contemp. fantasy. I only remember reading her "regular fantasy" works...and only her early stuff is really any good IMO.

What about the SERRAted Edge series? That strikes me as early(ish) urban fantasy and I really enjoyed it.

Perdido Street Station by China Mieville. Others of his books may be suitable too, but I haven't read them (yet).

He does a lot of scifi and fantasy but his "Secret History" series is set in a modern London with some twists. It has a "Dreslyn" like feel to its humor too. Here's his wiki entry
